Anton named NAIA All-American, others earn NCCAA honors

MOBILE, Ala. - Nearly every Campbellsville University men's tennis player closes his season by receiving a top national honor by the NAIA or NCCAA, as both organizations have announced their All-America teams. Tiger tennis' No. 1 singles player, Carlos Anton, receives the highest honor, being named a Second Team NAIA All-American, the national office announced Sunday.

Anton, a senior from Zamora, Spain, finished the season with a 9-8 record at No. 1 singles. He was also named a First Team NCCAA All-American, as well as being named to both the NCCAA All-Tournament team for both singles and doubles after helping guide the Tigers' to their first-ever national championship on May 11.

"It is a great honor to be named an All American for your season of work and all the effort you have put in. Having Carlos as a Second Team NAIA All American is such a great honor," said Tiger head coach Kyle Caven. "In his career here, we have finished first in regular season, qualified for NAIA nationals, and won the NCCAA nationals this season. He has had a great doubles career with Pablo (Numbela), as last year they won the ITA Regional and finished third at the ITA Small College National Championships. I am very proud of Carlos, and he can rest well after a great career."

Joining Anton on the NCCAA All-America First Team were No. 2 and No. 3 singles players Pablo Numbela and Sebastian Marot. Numbela was also named to the All-Tournament Team for both singles and doubles. Pontus Blom, Zac Malyon and Alberto Diaz were named NCCAA Second Team All-Americans for their play at the fourth, fifth and sixth singles positions.

Off the court, Maylon, Terry Caven and Chase Padgett were all recognized for their academics both as Daktronics-NAIA Scholar Athletes and NCCAA Scholar-Athletes. All three seniors graduated from CU on May 5 with Padgett graduating as salutatorian of the senior class.

"Being a Scholar Athlete is a big honor as you are required to not only play your season but be successful in the classroom as well. This honor is one of my favorites to see our athletes receive because that hard work shows the diligence they will need in their careers after tennis," Caven said.
