KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A season where goals and saves came in bunches, Campbellsville's Amanda Howard and Mhairi Fyfe both earned the status of NAIA All-American, the national office announced on Tuesday.
Howard was named the Lady Tigers first-ever NAIA first-team All-American. The sophomore from Harrodsburg, Ky. finished the season with 125 saves and a goals against average that was out of the world at 0.560.
Howard finished with 13 shutouts - which broke the single-season record. She now has 20 for her career and is only eight behind Brandie Hagerman's mark of 28.
"I am very proud of Amanda for this great accomplishment and for being the first-ever NAIA First Team All-American," said head coach Thom Jones. "She had a great season and broke many individual awards this year."
The Lady Tiger defense – which had four new faces this year - allowed only 12 goals on the season. Four of them came against No. 1 Lindsey Wilson in the regular season and tournament championship games while the another four came against Benedictine (Kan.) in the NAIA National Tournament.
"I believe Amanda would say the same but this award also goes to our defense," said Jones. "Without their great play this year, goals could have come more frequently. Our entire defense had an exceptional season and I couldn't be more proud."
Fyfe on the other hand has been a main cog in the Lady Tiger offense for three years now and has become the most decorated forward to ever wear the maroon and grey.
After being named NAIA Honorable Mention in 2014, Fyfe earned third team NAIA All-American honors this year after breaking the single-season mark with 27 goals. Fyfe finished the season ranked No. 2 in the country with eight game-winning goals and No. 5 with 27 total. Her 1.230 goals per game ranked her No. 6 and her 58 total points ranked her No. 7.
"Mhairi is very deserving of this award and I am proud of her success," said Jones. "I believe if we would have done reached the quarterfinal or semifinals of the national tournament, she would be a first team All-American along with Amanda. But she has a great season and carried our offense."
Fyfe now holds the single-season and career records for goals scored with 27 and 66, respectively.
The NAIA All-America committee consists of the NAIA-Woen's Soccer Coaches Association Executive Committee, the National Championship Games Committee and four men's soccer coaches—selected based on geography. Each team—first, second and third—consists of 11 members.
The 2015 Select Sport America-NAIA National Coach of the Year will be announced at the National Soccer Coaches' Association of America (NSCAA) National Convention, held in Baltimore, Md., from Jan. 13-17, 2016.
