Tennis claims three NAIA All-America Honorable Mentions

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Carlos Anton, Anita Henestrosa and Tanya Murtagh each received an NAIA All-America Honorable Mention this season after helping lead Campbellsville University to men's and women's Mid-South Conference regular season titles in 2011.

Anton, a junior from Madrid, Spain, posted a 12-6 record at No. 1 singles in 2011 while helping the Tigers to a share of their first MSC regular season championship. In the fall, he and doubles partner Pablo Numbela were ranked No. 3 in the NAIA after placing third at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) National Tournament. The duo won the doubles championship at the ITA regional early in the fall semester to advance to the finals in Mobile, Ala. The pair posted an 11-11 record in the spring.

Henestrosa and Murtagh paired up in doubles action most of the season and traded out time at No. 1 and No. 2 singles. Henestrosa, a sophomore from Switzerland, posted a 16-3 record in singles action and was 19-3 in doubles during her All-Conference season. Murtagh, a native of Dublin, Ireland, posted a 15-4 singles record and was 18-4 in doubles action to help her earn the MSC Freshman of the Year honor. Henestrosa received the same honor in 2010 prior to being named an NAIA All-America Honorable Mention, the first-ever in CU women's tennis history.

"We are very proud of Carlos, Anita and Tanya. They have worked very hard this year and are deserving of this honor, if not more," CU head coach Kyle Caven said. "We are excited to keep building our program with great players and just overall people all the way down our lineup. These honors wouldn't be possible without their teammates as well, who drive them hard to increase their skills and fitness to be the best they can be."

The Lady Tigers finished the season with a program-best No. 21 ranking in the NAIA, while the Tigers finished the season ranked No. 27.

Prior to the NAIA awards, a number of CU tennis players were recognized by the National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA).

Anton, Henestrosa and Murtagh each received NCCAA First Team All-America honors for singles play, while Second Team All-America honors went to Numbela for men's singles.

In doubles action, Henestrosa and Murtagh were recognized as First Team All-Americans, while Terry Caven and Zac Malyon received NCCAA First Team All-America honors for the men.

NCCAA Scholar Athlete honors went to Caven, Malyon, Numbela, Phil Carlisle and Chase Padgett on the men's side and Melanie Jones for the women.
