Randles wins NCCAA Indoor Track & Field triple jump title

CEDARVILLE, Ohio -- Campbellsville University sophomore P.J. Randles made history Saturday as the school's first-ever national champion for indoor track and field. Randles scored 15 of the Tigers' 16 points in the National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA) Indoor Track and Field Championships at the Cedarville University Field House.

"I was working hard for it. Throughout the season, even though we only had two or three meets for indoor, I was doing a lot of events to get me tough and get me in better shape. Hopefully through the rest of the outdoor season, I can stay focused, run faster and jump farther for bigger and better goals, not only for NCCAA but NAIA," Randles said.

Randles captured the triple jump national championship with a mark of 13.94 meters, .21 better than his fifth-place jump last season in the NCCAA Indoor Championships. The national title is the fourth for CU men's track and field and 10th individual NAIA or NCCAA national title for all sports at Campbellsville. Detrick Briggs won back-to-back NCCAA outdoor triple jump titles in 2009 and 2010 and Xavier Walker won the 400-meter dash at the 2011 NCCAA Outdoor Championships.

Briggs was there Saturday, helping jumps coach George Eskridge give tips to Randles and helping keep him relaxed.

With 13.94 meters being a new personal record for Randles, he hopes it's the launching point for a successful outdoor season, which begins March 23.

"I did a lot of work over summer on my own to do what I could to jump farther," Randles said. "I still have some stuff I can improve on, so I'm going to get that down and hopefully get into the 14s consistently and maybe 15 by the end of the spring."

Randles also posted a Top 8 finish in the 55-meter hurdles with a fourth-place time of 7.78 seconds. He was .07 behind race winner Andy Lipiec of Indiana Weselyan and only .03 behind a two-way tie for second. In the high jump, Randles finished two inches short of the Top 8 in a tie for 11th.

Demytrius Gipson was eighth in the 200-meter dash, gaining one point for the Tigers.

Jermaine Dumas placed ninth in the shot put with a mark of 13.29 meters, .34 meters from the Top 8.

Randles and Gipson both also competed in the 4x400-meter relay, along with Truman Padgett and Christian Black, finishing 12th in a time of 3:37.39. The Tiger distance medley was tenth.

Campbellsville placed 11th in the 19-team field at the NCCAA Indoor Championships. The meet concludes the 2012 indoor track season for CU.
