DES MOINES, Iowa –Campbellsville University has five of its 10 wrestlers still wrestling in the NAIA National Tournament after the All-American rounds Thursday.
Day one of the NAIA Wrestling Championships got off to a slow start for fifth-ranked Campbellsville. Eight of the Tigers' Top 10 received a bye through the first round, but wildcard draws Robert Boston (125 pounds) and DeCoreus Leavell (133) dropped their opening matches. They were the first of six Tigers to drop their opening match with only four advancing to the quarterfinal round.
Of those four, Brandon Westerman (141) and Conor Young (157) still have their national championship hopes alive after winning decisions in the quarters, 5-2 and 7-2, respectively.
Young (27-4) will wrestle Grand View's Chad Lowman in the semifinal Saturday morning, while Westerman (25-10) will face Myles Mazurkewicz from Great Falls.
Three others are still looking to wrestle back and finish as high as possible, including now two-time All-American Allen Scruggs and first-time All-Americans Shawn McGhee and Tyler Alsip.
CU collected bonus points during the All-America round of consolation, as Alsip recorded a 17-1 tech fall against Missouri Valley's Dennis Welch, Shawn McGhee pinned Dickinson State's Sean Elkins and Allen Scruggs majored, 16-2, against long-time rival Courtney Freeman from the University of the Cumberlands.
Last year's national runner-up at 141 pounds, Chris Teague, fell short of repeating as an All-American, as he dropped a 5-4 decision to Cumberland University's Jake Williams after falling in the quarterfinals to Grand View's Gustavo Martinez.
Boston, Leavell, Kyle Terry and Josh Ashbrook were all 0-2 for the tournament.
Campbellsville is currently in eighth place among 37 teams with 42.0 team points. Missouri Valley College holds a one-point edge on CU, while Lindsey Wilson College and the University of Great Falls are tied for fifth place with 51.5 points. Defending champion, and tournament host, Grand View University leads the competition with 93 points and Southern Oregon University is second with 83 points.
The tournament resumes Saturday morning at 10 a.m. CST with the championship semifinals, followed by the remaining consolation and placement rounds. The championship round is scheduled for Saturday night at 7 p.m. CST
