Caston named MSC Wrestler of the Year

CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. — (WALLPAPER) The Mid-South Conference announced its 2015 men's wrestling awards on Thursday and Campbellsville's Davion Caston was at the top.

Caston, who won the 133-pound NAIA National Championship, was named the Mid-South Conference Wrestler of the Year.

The conference coaches voted Caston as the wrestler of the year after posting a 17-3 record. He won the East Qualifier en route to the national title and earned NAIA All-American honors for his national championship finish.

Caston upset No. 1 Michael Ruiz from Great Falls, 10-6, in the championship match to help Campbellsville finish sixth as a team. The national title was CU's third, with Zach Flake winning the 141-pound title in 2007 and Tommy Pretty winning the 133-pound championship in 2010.

Teammate and fellow NAIA All-American, Travis McIntosh joined Caston as a First Team All-MSC performer. McIntosh came up just shy of a national title, finishing runner-up in the 174 weight class.

Campbellsville had a slew of players on the second team. NAIA All-American Shawn McGhee (157) led the way with L.J. Henderson (165), Chuck Sharon (184) and Nate Knauf (197) also being named second team All-MSC.

University of the Cumberlands' Jake Sinkovics and Lindsey Wilson's Michael Pixley were voted on as co-MSC Freshmen of the Year. Also, the Blue Raiders' head coach, Corey Reuff was named Coach of the Year.

Sinkovics posted a 28-5 record during his first collegiate season. He earned NAIA All-American honors after a third-place finish at 125 pounds at the national championships. Pixley shared the freshman of the year honors after a 21-1 record during the season. He finished runner-up at 184 pounds at the national championships -- claiming NAIA All-American honors.

Ruff earned coach of the year honors after leading the Blue Raiders to the Mid-South Conference regular season title and the NAIA East Qualifying title. His Blue Raiders ended the season No. 3 in the final NAIA Top-20 Poll after a conference-best third-place finish at the NAIA National Championships.

The all-conference team was determined by the finishes at the NAIA East Qualifying Tournament. The top finisher in each weight class earned first team while the next best MSC wrestler in each class earns second team all-conference honors.
