Scantland earns Golfer of the Year, Lady Tigers finish second in MSC Championship

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. — Lady Tiger golf could not overcome high winds and fast greens in the final round of the Mid-South Conference championship at Bowling Green Country Club finishing second.

The 12th-ranked Lady Tigers carded team scores of 319-316-319 in the three championship rounds to finish with 954 strokes. No. 9 University of the Cumberlands used a tournament-low 307 in the second round and shot 317-307-318 to total 942 strokes for team champion honors.

Individually, it was Cassidy Scantland being named the Mid-South Conference Golfer of the Year for the third time in four seasons. The Golfer of the Year, First-Team All-Conference and Second-Team All-Conference are based on seven scores from the three MSC Tournaments throughout the year and each student-athlete can toss out their two highest rounds. Scantland finished one stroke ahead of University of the Cumberlands' Kaitlyn Riley for Golfer of the Year honors.

Today, though, it just wasn't Scantland's day. She finished with a final round 85 to drop from first to third on the final leaderboard. Riley, who is coming off an NAIA title in 2016, won her first MSC Championship after out-lasting teammate Annabeth McKay by four strokes and Scantland by seven. Riley fired 78-77-73 over the three rounds.

Anna-Marie Hyatt fired the second-lowest round for CU with a final round 79 to finish tied for fifth. Michaela Jarman shot low-round of the day for the Lady Tigers with a five-over 77 to place 16th.

Kylie Withrow was joined by Scantland, Hyatt and Jarman on the first team by finishing with a final round 82 to place tied for seventh.

Rounding out the Lady Tigers on the week was senior Ashley Goodin. She fired 83-82-81 in her three rounds to be tied for 12th.

Campbellsville ends the season with a pair of tournament wins and five runner-up finishes. CU also placed second in all three MSC Championship events over the fall and spring.

The Lady Tigers will now await an at-large selection to the NAIA Women's Golf Championship in Palm Beach, Fla. at PGA National on May 23-26. Last season, Campbellsville was ranked No. 14 in the final NAIA Coaches' Poll but was the first team out of the Championship by the selection committee. CU ranked No. 12 coming into the MSC Championship this week.
