Lady Tiger softball seeks fifth MSC Tournament title; CU opens tourney on Friday vs. KCU

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. — Lady Tiger softball begins the quest for their fifth Mid-South Conference Tournament championship in program history on Friday morning at Michael O. Buchanon Park in Bowling Green, Ky.

No. 1-seeded Campbellsville faces the eighth-seeded Knights of Kentucky Christian University on Friday morning, May 4th, at 11 a.m. ET. For the third straight season, the Mid-South Conference Tournament is being hosted at Buchanon Park.

Jordan Alves will broadcast all post season games on the Campbellsville University Sports Network – www.campbellsvilletigers.com/watch.

Mid-South Conference history:
Campbellsville has won the regular season a record eight times and the Lady Tigers have earned the No. 1 seed in the tournament seven times, with three of those turning into tournament championships.

Overall, the regular season champion has also won the tournament title only nine of the 18 years.

The Lady Tigers have won the MSC Tournament four times – 2016, 2008, 2007 and 2006.

Lady Tigers looking to bounce back after losing Humphrey:
On Sunday, Campbellsville saw arguably its best hitter and glove go down with a season-ending knee injury. But, the season goes on and goals are still the intact like they were at the beginning of the year.

In Humphrey's absence, Dana Adkins and Rebecca Miller are the answers at third base. Miller played third in the season opener in Humphrey's absence and was the quick replacement on Sunday after the injury in the fifth inning of game three. But Adkins was the answer, and played very well at the hot corner, in game four – which was the first time in her career playing third base.

Humphrey ends her sophomore campaign leading the Lady Tigers by hitting .386 and is tied with Alexis Smith for the team-high in home runs (10) and is second in RBI (46). Defensively, Humphrey has a .930 fielding percentage but ranked No. 5 in the NAIA in total assists (138) and No. 8 in assists per game (2.9).

Someone has to step up:
CU has been getting everything and more from two-time MSC Player of the Year Jacqueline Roof. Hitting .385 with nine home runs and 36 RBI, Roof is one of the best players in the country once again. Her .679 slugging percentage and .484 on-base-percentage leads CU. She also leads the Lady Tigers in career slugging at .723 and runs scored with 209 – all of that from the leadoff spot in the batting order.

Alexis Smith and Ryley Whitney have made big strides at the plate this season. Whitney is hitting .361 with a team-high 15 doubles – which is second in the conference – and has drove in 38 from the five-hole. Smith leads CU with the 51 RBI and is hitting .336. Both of them will have to pick up the missing bat in the order.

Ryleigh Oldham had a solid weekend at Lindsey Wilson to get back on track. Oldham went 6-for-12 at the plate and scored four runs. On the season, Oldham has six homers and 30 RBI from the nine-hole.

Offensively, CU ranks 10thin the NAIA in home runs per game (0.9), 11thin doubles (92), 15thin runs scored (323) and RBI (292).

Pitching staff is the best in the MSC:
Neely Quint, who ranks No. 3 in the NAIA with 25 wins, boasts a 25-2 record and leads the MSC with a 1.44 ERA and 165 innings pitches. Quint started the season 24-0 – which is the longest streak in program history.

Morgan Gailor also has a sub-two ERA at 1.94 and boasts a 15-6 overall record. Gailor ranks fifth in the MSC in ERA (1.94), second in hits allowed per game (6.1) and third in wins.

As a staff, CU leads the MSC in ERA at 1.95, second in opponent batting average (.240), second in hits allowed (302), first in runs allowed (129), first in earned runs allowed (87) and second in walks allowed (65).

In the NAIA rankings, CU ranks 17thin ERA.

Scouting Kentucky Christian:
The Knights are competing in the MSC for the first time in history and finished eighth in the regular season with a conference record of 6-20.

Overall, KCU is 13-32 on the year and actually stole a game from the Lady Tigers to conclude the regular season series, 2-1, on April 14.

The other five wins in conference came against Cumberland University (2-1), Shawnee State (8-5), University of the Cumberlands (7-4) and Pikeville (9-5).

In the upset win on April 14, Cartney Schoolcraft tossed a complete-game four-hitter and allowed an unearned run.
