Hawkins athletic Center, located on the corner of Tiger Way and Chandler Street, was constructed in 2003 and dedicated Sept. 27, 2003. The 20,000-square-foot building is named in honor of principal donors O.D. Hawkins, a member of the CU Board of Trustees, and his wife, Bessie. It's estimated cost was $1.4 Million.

The first floor of the facility is home to both the Tiger Baseball and Fighting Tiger Football programs, with offices and locker rooms, as well as a 2,800 square foot weight room. 

The second floor was completed in 2007 and is home to the Department of Human Performances, as well as two classrooms, study room with half kitchen, additional coaches offices, coaches meeting room, and the Maroon Room.

 


About the Hawkins

O.D. and Bessie Hawkiins of Owenton, Ky., were happily married for 64 years and were a vital part of the Owenton, Ky., and Owen County communities. In addition to being a financial steward to Campbellsville (College) University, the Hawkins family was a constant contributor in their community and were representatives of the Owen County Red Cross as well as active members at Owenton First Baptist Church.

Mr. Hawkins, a veteran of the US Army served 23 years as farm manager at Eden Shale Farm through the University of Kentucky's College of Agriculture Cooperative Extension. He also served as director of the Owen County Farm Bureau; chairman of the ASCS committee; director of the Southern States Coop; chairman of the Owen County Farmers Home Administration Board; and was named the recipient of the Owen County Outstanding Citizen Award and an Outstanding Alumni Award by the University of Kentucky Alumni Association. He was a former deacon and trustee at Owenton First Baptist Church.

Mrs. Hawkins taught high school home economics and elementary school for many years. She taught Sunday school for many years at Owenton FBC.  She was a member of the Gideon's, Retired Teachers Association and the Homemakers Club. In 1985, she was selected as Owen Countian of the Year and also received the Distinguished Alumnus Award from the University of Kentucky College of Education. She also served many years as one of the directors at Kentucky Farm Bureau. Â
