WVU Tech slips past Campbellsville

A late rally Tuesday pushed West Virginia University Tech past Campbellsville, 3-2, in overtime and into third place in the Mid-South Conference.

Campbellsville overcame a 1-0 deficit to take a 2-1 lead in the second half, but the Golden Bears tied the game on a long, bouncing goal by Laura Spiers over the head of CU keeper Sara Akers to force overtime. WVU Tech attacked immediately in extra time, as Shaniece Thorpe scored 30 seconds into the extra period for the win.

Thorpe assisted a Golden Bears' goal in the first half by Hannah Jaskot to give WVU Tech a 1-0 lead at the half. Laura Swencki equalized the game with an early second-half goal, followed up in the 62nd minute by a goal from Megan Campbell to give the Lady Tigers a 2-1 lead.

As the second half played on and mud thickened in the midfield, play began to slow until the late surge by West Virginia Tech.

CU (10-5-1, 3-3) travels to Trevecca Nazarene University on Thursday for a non-conference game at 6 p.m.
