The
Campbellsville University Lady Tigers beat the Tennessee Wesleyan College
Bulldogs, 3-1, Tuesday in their home opener of the 2009 season. Tennessee Wesleyan maintained
possession for the majority of the opening 10 minutes of play, but the Lady
Tigers stood their ground.
In the 14th minute, freshmen Cassie Yannelli
scored what appeared to be the first goal of the game, but the goal was called
back by the referee because of goalkeeper interference. Yannelli sprung back with a break-away
goal with 23:54 left in the first half, giving the Tigers a 1-0 lead.
CU continued to dominate possession, as freshmen Darci Standridge found the net
in the 39th minute from 18 yards out, giving the Lady Tigers a 2-0 lead at the
half.
In the second half, Yannelli
attempted to chip in a third goal for the Lady Tigers on a free kick in the
50th minute, but Bulldogs goalkeeper Chealsey Baxter managed to grab the long
attempt. With 30:47 to play, sophomore
Kelsey Mandel scored the Lady Tigers'
third goal on a cross from senior
Laura Swencki. Tennessee Wesleyan's Helen Collins slipped a
goal past CU freshman goalkeeper
Sarah Akers with 20:44 to play to get on the
board, but was unable to challenge the outcome of the game.
Campbellsville (3-1) will host
Cedarville University at 2 p.m. Saturday.
