Box Score CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. - The Campbellsville University Lady Tiger soccer team won its Mid-South Conference first round game Saturday night in a 4-0 shutout against Bluefield College. The Lady Tigers (10-7-1) will advance to the second round on Wednesday against Cumberland University at Lindsey Wilson College.
"I'm very proud of my girls," said head coach Thomas Jones. "They played hard tonight and everything came together."
The first goal came off a corner kick from junior Bailey McDonough. CU's Rebekah Carl attempted a header, but missed, giving forward Kailene Allis a chance to control the ball. Carl didn't give up on the play though. While laying on the turf, Carl side-kicked a tap of the ball from Allis, and barely floated the ball over the hands of Bluefield keeper Kayla Richardson.
The Lady Tigers came out for the second half ready for play. Within the first 40 seconds, senior midfielder Cassie Yannelli fired a shot past Richardson that was so quick, fellow senior Kelsey Mandel had to jump over it to avoid blocking it. The goal, put the score at 2-0.
Two more security goals came just minutes later from CU leading scorer, Jessica Ralph. In the 38th minute, the junior forward scored with an assist from sophomore Alex Shaffer. Only five minutes later, Ralph scored yet another off an assist from freshman Rachel Veatch.
Bluefield took a total of five shots, one being on goal, which was saved by junior keeper Brandie Hagerman. CU had ten shots on goal, with six saves by Richardson.
The next tournament game will be on Wednesday at 3:30 p.m. EST against Cumberland University at Lindsey Wilson College. Cumberland defeated Shawnee State in their first game on Friday night, Nov. 3 in a 10-0 shutout. The Lady Tigers will look for the rematch after an early season, 2-0 loss against the Bulldogs.
"We are looking forward to playing Cumberland University," said Jones. "It was a good game last time and I'm glad we get another shot at them."
