UPLAND, Ind. — For the second time in the Thom Jones era Campbellsville University women's soccer starts the season 2-0. The Lady Tigers won their second-straight road game today, defeating Taylor University 4-0.
The Lady Tigers (2-0) started very efficiently, scoring three times on four shots in the first half.
It all started with NCCAA All-American Mhairi Fyfe scoring her 39th career goal, putting the Lady Tigers ahead 1-0 in the 19th minute.
Eleven minutes later freshman Taylor Beals recorded her first career assist, finding Aris Kuntz to put Campbellsville ahead, 2-0.
Campbellsville kept pouring it on in the first half as Kuntz returned the favor to a teammate and found fellow senior Kathryn Thomas for her third career score, pushing CU ahead 3-0 just before halftime.
"We started a little slow and really struggled but took advantage on some long balls and we were able to capitalize on all three chances," said Jones. "The early score didn't translate to what the game actually was because Taylor University was very physical. They played very well."
Sophomore goalkeeper Amanda Howard recorded five saves in the first period to keep the Trojans out of the net.
Fyfe kept the pressure on the Taylor University (0-1) late in the match and found the back of the net for her second goal — Devon Burnside with the assist in the 86th minute.
Howard finished with three saves in the second half to end the day with eight and her ninth career shutout.
"We made some changes in the second half on the defensive end," said Jones. "We went to a 4-5-1 formation to control the midfield better and we were able to do that. The girls played a lot more physical in the second half."
The Lady Tigers finished with 11 shots with five on goal. Taylor University finished with 13 shots with eight on goal.
Campbellsville will return home on Saturday, Aug. 29 for its first home game of the season, as they host Bryan College at 11 a.m. ET. The game can be watched live on the Campbellsville University Sports Network – HERE.
