SPRINGFIELD, Ky. — Senior Rachel Veatch scored three goals and assisted on another to lead Campbellsville women's soccer over St. Catharine College, 7-2.
The Lady Tigers allowed a goal in the second minute but dominated the game the remaining 88. The Patriots (2-4, 1-1 MSC) did find the back of the net in the 86th minute for the just the second and third goals allowed by Amanda Howard all season.
Howard (7-0) recorded seven saves in the win.
Campbellsville (8-0, 2-0 MSC) out shot the Patriots, 23 to 14 with 16 of the Lady Tigers' shots on goal.
"It was a good conference win for us tonight," said coach Thom Jones. "We came out slow but once we turned everything on the goals came in bunches. It was the same thing in the second half too. We started great but then got complacent. We have to play a full 90 minutes no matter what the score is."
Rachel Veatch recorded her first career hat trick to lead the Lady Tigers. She scored all three of her goals in the first half – 5th minute, 11th minute, and the 38th minute. Kathryn Thomas dished out her first of two assists on Veatch's final goal.
Veatch also assisted on a goal by Mhairi Fyfe in the second half. Veatch is now second on the team with six goals and leads CU with four assists.
"It was great for Rachel to come out and score like that. She needed a big game," said Jones. "She used her speed over the top and took it to another level. That will help with her confidence and the team really fed off her energy tonight."
Fyfe added another goal late in the second half for her fourth multi-goal game of the season. She now has 11 goals on the season and is only five goals away from breaking the career mark of 53.
Junior captain Chelsea Gill also had a multi-goal game scoring twice in the 47th and 53rd minutes. It is the second straight game Gill has scored twice, as she did so against Tennessee Wesleyan on Friday, Sept. 11 – which was the first of her career. Thomas also had her second assist on Gill's first score.
"The leadership of all of our upperclassmen has been great this year," said Jones. "Mhairi has to stay focused and has to work harder than she has in the past because all the teams know she is one of the best. But that opens up for others on the field. They just have to capitalize and take advantage of openings.
"Chelsea is just a beast. She wins all the 50-50 balls and she keeps us in the game. Her leadership by her actions is what has carried us this far in the season."
Campbellsville will take a week off before heading to Portsmouth, Ohio for another conference matchup with Shawnee State University. The Lady Tigers and Bears kickoff at 4 p.m. ET.
