Great Falls knocks CU out of NAIA Opening Round

SIOUX CITY, Iowa — Campbellsville was able to jump one hurdle today, but spunky Great Falls proved to have the Lady Tigers' number for the second day in a row — knocking No. 4 CU out of the NAIA Opening Round, 5-1.

The Lady Tigers had to go extra innings in an 8-2 win over Grand View to earn a spot opposite Great Falls in the loser's bracket final. With the win, the Argos (27-19) will face host Morningside tomorrow at 2 ET.

Grand View (43-11) unraveled in the top of the eighth after tying the score 2-2 in the sixth on Abbey Wilmes' single that scored Kendra Tott. Tott had led off the sixth with a triple.

The Lady Tigers stranded 10 runners through seven innings, but batted around in the eighth to put the game out of reach.

Victoria Decker (28-5) sat the Vikings down with a five hitter. She finished her career with an 85-25 win/loss mark and 521 strikeouts. She worked her way out of trouble in the third, fourth, fifth and sixth innings when she was able to strand eight Grand View runners.

Senior Adrean Jordan started the top of the eighth with a single to center and Madison Mudd plated pinch runner Kalin Bottoms to scored what turned out to be the winning run.

But the Lady Tigers weren't finished. With one out, Jacqueline Roof walked, Shelby Ray singled and Rebecca Miller walked to set the table for Hailey Spizla's grand slam.

Ray, Brittany Rippy and Mudd led the nine-hit attack (five in the eighth inning) with two hits apiece.

Against Great Falls, Roof cleared the center field fence for a 1-0 lead. But that would be the last time Campbellsville (49-10) would score.

The Argos got to pitchers Neely Quint and Morgan Gailor for 11 combined hits. Quint (19-4) was relieved after 2 2/3 innings when she hit a batter and gave up a single to Keeley Van Baricom. Gailor struck out Chloe Cross to end the threat, but Great Falls was leading 3-1 at the time.

Gailor allowed two more runs in the fifth when, after two outs, she gave up three hits and a walk.

Shelby Abeyta (6-6) allowed only three hits in addition to Roof's homer. Ray and Jordan singled and Miller doubled in the top of the sixth.
