Lady Tigers commit six errors and were unable to get the timely hit, falling to Georgetown

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. — The Lady Tigers committed six errors, left 13 runners on base and finished 2-for-13 with runners in scoring position, falling to Georgetown College on Saturday night at Buchanon Park, 4-0.

The complete game shutout for Georgetown's Hannah Morton (12-2) is the first time Campbellsville has been denied a run this season. The last time CU was shut out was in March of last season.

Georgetown will now move into the loser's bracket finals to face one-seed Lindsey Wilson tomorrow afternoon at 12 p.m. ET. The winner of that game will face the tournament Cinderella in six-seeded University of the Cumberlands, which has pulled three upsets over each of the top three seeds.

Morgan Gailor (12-6) earned the start in the circle for her first appearance in the tournament but did not get out of the opening inning. She allowed consecutive hits – a drag to Chaselyn Allgeier and double to Chelsea Osbourn - to score the games first run. But walks to Kara Howard and Katie Young loaded the bases with one out and Neely Quint was summoned out of the bullpen.

Quint worked out of the jam with a strikeout and ground ball to hold Georgetown to only one run.

Campbellsville loaded the bases in the bottom of the inning after a single by Jacqueline Roof, a walk to Tori Humphrey and a line drive single off the third baseman's glove from Rebecca Miller. Morton pitched out of the jam with a short fly out to right by Brianna Scott and a groundout to first by Hailey Szpila.

In the second GC had the bases loaded for the second straight inning but the Lady Tigers and Quint worked out of it again by not allowing a run. Georgetown finished the game with four innings having the bases loaded.

The turning point of the game was in the fourth inning. A leadoff double by Alexis Smith set up the Lady Tigers first scoring chance but pinch-runner Kalin Bottoms was gunned down on a bang-bang play at the plate by Katie Young after a single up the middle for Jacqueline Roof. In that same inning, a walk to Brittany Rippy loaded the bases but Tori Humphrey grounded out to end the threat.

Roof led the Lady Tigers with three hits, while Madison Mudd went 2-for-2 as well with a walk. In the tournament, Roof went 8-for-16 to lead CU's offensive attack. But no other Lady Tiger had more than three hits in the four games of the tournament.

Moving to the fifth inning, Georgetown scratched three runs by only recording two singles, three fielder's choices but were aided with two of the six Lady Tiger errors.

Katie Young singled to center to start the inning and Alli Watson followed with a bloop-single into short right field. Morton grounded to short, but Roof booted the ball, loading the bases. With one out, Janes ripped a ball into the hole between short and third. Roof made a diving play but her throw to third from her knees was low, allowing a run to score and keeping the bases loaded.

Watson scored on a passed ball before Allgeier reached on an error by Humphrey, loading the bases again. Morton was forced out at the plate on a grounder by Osborn, but Howard hit a ground ball to short. Roof flipped to Humphrey at third, but she was not on the bag when Allgeier slid in, allowing another run to come across for a 4-0 Georgetown advantage.

In the final three innings, Campbellsville had multiple runners on each time but were unable to scratch one across the plate. The Lady Tigers actually had the game-tying run on deck but Mia Aldridge went down looking for the only strikeout by Morton.

Overall in the tournament, the wind played a major factor for the Lady Tigers at the plate. Campbellsville went 27-of-119 (.227) with seven of those being extra base knocks. The pitching staff as a whole was remarkable, holding opponents to 24-for-131 (.183). Rachel Denkins did not allow an earned run in 17.1 innings pitched and only gave up six hits. Neely Quint allowed four earned runs in 17.1 innings of work.

Campbellsville will now have almost two weeks until playing in the NAIA Opening Round Championship at the very park – Michael Buchanon Park in Bowling Green. The Lady Tigers were selected to host along with the Bowling Green Visitors and Convention Bureau on May 15-17.
