BOWLING GREEN, Ky. — Lady Tiger softball just could not put together a full game in the circle, on the defensive side or at the plate, falling to St. Francis 11-3 in five innings on Tuesday night in the Bowling Green Bracket.
The loss ends Campbellsville's season with a 38-15 record but the win advances the Fighting Saints into the championship round with undefeated Indiana Wesleyan. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. ET at Michael O. Buchanon Park and if the Saints win, the if-necessary game will be 45 minutes after the completion on game one.
Today, though, it was Morgan Dieringer (26-5) tossing her 27
th complete-game, allowing three runs on three hits and striking out three. Dieringer has pitched all 19 inning for the Saints in their first three games in the NAIA Softball Opening Round Championship.
Neely Quint started in the circle and was one of four pitchers for the Lady Tigers. Quint allowed three runs in the third inning after a leadoff walk came back to haunt CU. Paige Egen had an infield single and Anna Wetherell singled to load the bases with no outs until Brook Karraker cleared them with a double to the fence in left.
Rachel Denkins entered and allowed an RBI single by Hailey Lenth to put the Saints ahead, 4-0 through three innings.
The Lady Tigers battled right back in the fourth, though. CU put up a three-spot with two outs. It was a two-out error by the shortstop Ashley Galason allowing
Markie Smith to reach. Dieringer allowed a walk to
Madison Mudd and
Jacqueline Roof delivered an RBI single to score one. After a walk to
Brittany Rippy,
Tori Humphrey cleared the bases with a two-RBI double to right-centerfield cutting CU's deficit to one, 4-3.
But that didn't last long as St. Francis put up another five-spot in the fourth.
Morgan Gailor started in the circle and got ahead two strikes to none to Katelyn Rolniak but ended up allowing the first of two walks in the inning to lead off the frame. Egen reached on an error and then the flood gates opened with RBI singles by Wetherell, Karraker and Balandis and a second Lady Tiger error to score four runs.
Mia Alrdridge was the fourth Lady Tiger to see time in the circle, allowing a hit-by-pitch to the first batter she saw for the Saints' fifth run.
After CU went down 1-2-3 in the fifth, St. Francis took advantage by capitalizing on two errors and scoring twice. It was Kayla Garcia's ground ball that scored Karraker to end it in five frames.
Roof had two of the three hits for CU, while Humphrey had the other. The top of the order did the damage for USF, driving in six runs and going 6-for-10 at the plate.
