CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. – The Campbellsville men's tennis team snapped its two-match skid with a 6-3 victory over fifth-ranked University of Northwestern Ohio at the Kelly Hall Tennis Complex on Tuesday afternoon.
The Racers (4-5) took the early lead over the Tigers (9-2) in a top-four match at No. 1 doubles. Iustin Baciu – ranked fourth in the NAIA – upended
Chrys Castro and
Alejandro Reyes – No. 3 in the NAIA – in an 8-5 matchup.
Pablo Alonso Munoz and
Adrian Sabrojo got Campbellsville on the board with an 8-6 victory at No. 3 doubles. In the decisive third doubles matchup at No. 2,
Blayze O'Keefe and
Martin Munoz notched an 8-6 win over Gjorgi Popovski and Artur Culicovschi.
Holding a 2-1 lead to start singles matchups, Castro upset No. 17 Baciu at No. 2 singles, 6-4, 6-2 to push the Tiger lead to 3-1. The Racers pulled the team score back within one after Culicovschi defeated O'Keefe, 6-4, 7-5, at No. 3 singles. Another upset pushed Campbellsville just one point away from clinching after No. 48 Reyes outlasted No. 39 Popa at top-seeded singles, 4-6, 6-3, 6-3.
Northwestern Ohio continued to hang around after Marcos Salazar won 6-2, 6-2 at No. 5 singles.
Alex Spalding clinched the team victory for Campbellsville with a 7-5, 6-2 victory at No. 6 singles. Alonso Munoz sealed the 6-3 win for the Tigers after upsetting No. 43 Popovski at No. 4 singles 3-6, 7-5, 6-3.
Campbellsville is set play its second match in as many days against Lewis-Clark State College on Wednesday at 2 p.m. ET from the Kelly Hall Tennis Complex.
