CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. – The Campbellsville women's tennis team suffered a 7-2 loss at home on Tuesday afternoon to seventh-ranked University of Northwestern Ohio.
To start out the top-20 dual, the Racers (5-4) jumped out to and early 2-0 lead over the Lady Tigers (9-2). Naa Ankrah and Frederique Span defeated
Bailey Decker and
Brooklyn Harris at No. 3 doubles, 8-3, while Melena Lopez and Camila Puente won the second-seeded doubles match, 8-3, over
Grace Rowe and
Bolor Enkhbayar.
The 8-3 scores continued to roll heading into the top-seeded doubles match, which was also a top-20 affair in itself.
Kaede Amano and
Majella Nobile – ranked 18th in the NAIA – defeated Alisa Reshetnikova and Valeriya Kolegova – ranked 19th in the NAIA – in an 8-3 contest.
Amano – No. 24 in the NAIA – took the momentum from her doubles win into singles action, where she tied the team score, 2-2, with a 6-4, 6-2 win over No. 26 Reshetnikova at No. 1 singles. However, the Campbellsville momentum did not last long as the Racers won the final five singles matches.
At No. 3 singles, No. 43 Kolegova beat Nobile, 6-2, 6-0, and then Puente defeated Enkhbayar at No. 2 singles, 6-3, 6-2. The match clincher came from Span in the sixth-seeded singles matchup in a 6-1, 6-0 decision over Decker. Rounding out the dual, Harris dropped a 6-1, 6-0 match to Ankrah at No. 5 singles and Lopez beat Rowe at No. 4 singles, 6-2, 6-2.
Campbellsville returns to competition on Wednesday afternoon at 2 p.m. ET against Lewis-Clark State College at the Kelly Hall Tennis Complex.
