Hurst drives in seven runs; Williams picks up first win of the season over Culver Stockton

GULF SHORES, Ala. — Freshman Riley Hurst went 4-for-4 at the plate and drove in seven runs to lead Campbellsville to a come-from-behind 16-8 run-rule win over Culver Stockton College on Saturday night.

The Lady Tigers went 2-0 on the day after also beating Houston-Victoria 4-0 earlier on Saturday. CU will now play No. 18 Central Methodist on Sunday to end the Gulf Coast Invitational at 10 a.m. ET.

Tonight, it was a tale of two games but in the span of five innings. The Lady Tigers came out swinging to a 4-0 lead, but the Wildcats answered with a four-run second.

Morgan Gailor fell victim to a tight zone and the Wildcats answered by swinging some hot bats. After only getting one out in the second, Gailor was chased out of the game and replaced by Payton Blades. She worked the Lady Tigers out of a second and third jam to keep the game tied, 4-4.

CU answered in the bottom half of the inning as Hurst picked up her second hit of the night – the first double – to drive in Ryley Whitney. Now the Lady Tigers led 5-4 but a two-run home run by Culver Stockton's Kirsten Burris gave the advantage right back to the Wildcats.

Her sister Cassie Burris delivered an RBI double to center field to score two more Wildcat runs and push the lead to 8-5.

CU once against answered in the bottom of the third as the Lady Tigers went to the small game. A leadoff single by Kelly Wheeler, moved her to second base with a sac bunt by Ryleigh Oldham, a wild pitched moved her to third and then scored on a Payton Blades sac fly, 8-6.

The fourth inning was the deciding factor tonight. Trailing 8-6, the Lady Tigers strung together seven two-out hits and earned three walks to score 10 runs. It all started with a two-out triple by freshman Hannah Judd. Wheeler, Oldham, Payton Blades and Ryley Whitney all delivered run-scoring hits in the inning.

The night was capped by Hurst. She delivered her second double of the night – a three-run two-bagger to put the lead at 16-8. The seven-RBI for Hurst is the third time a Lady Tiger has put up those numbers in the last five years. Brianna Scott drove in seven against St. Catharine College on April 5, 2016 and Mia Aldridge did so on March 22, 2018 vs. Pikeville.

Karson Williams (1-0) was the third pitcher coach Shannon Wathen used tonight and she had the best outing of her career earning the win. Williams entered to end the bleeding in the third inning and struck out her lone batter she faced. In the fourth, she allowed a one-out walk but struck out two more.

In the fifth inning, Williams allowed a leadoff single by Andrea Raines was thrown out at second base. Her sinking liner ricocheted off the diving glove of Lexi Miller but Blades was in the right place at the right time. She then gunned down Raines trying to extend her single into a double.

Williams then struck out another batter and earned a fly out to end the game.

She finished the night tossing 2.1 innings, allowed the one single and walked one, while striking out a career-high four.
