Tigers fall just short in season opening loss to Bellarmine University, 4-3

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Tiger tennis started their season at Bellarmine University on Saturday but came away with a 4-3 loss to the Knights.

No. 13 Campbellsville won three of the six singles matches and only one doubles match for its three points.

The new scoring system for the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) features all three doubles matches combining for one point, therefore whoever wins the majority of the three doubles matches receives one point. Then the six singles matches count as one point each for a total of seven – which is different than the previously needed nine team points.

In doubles, the Tigers No. 2-seeded team of Eric Bernabeu and Raul Safont won in a tiebreak over Emil Bjoerlykke Bed and Noah Neuhauser, 7-6 (10-0).

In singles, the Tigers won three matches – Nos. 4-6.

At No. 4 singles, Matus Sevcik won 6-5, 5-7, 10-8 over Michael Staff. At No. 5 singles, it was Nicholas Andrade winning 6-4, 7-5 over Sam Reuff and at No. 6 singles it was Pablo Mossenta over Eli Franks, 0-6, 7-5, 10-8.

The loss is puts Campbellsville at 0-1 on the year but the Tigers return to action next weekend for a pair of matches at Indiana University Southeast and Indiana University East on Saturday-Sunday, Feb. 22-23.
