Lady Tigers fall in Reinhardt Invitational finale to split on the weekend

WALESKA, Ga. — Payton Blades hit a solo home run leading Campbellsville to a 1-0 win over South Carolina Beaufort but Martin Methodist left a sour taste within the Lady Tigers' after upsetting CU, 8-7.

The final day of the Reinhardt Invitational ended with another split for Campbellsville (4-2) as the Lady Tigers finish the weekend 2-2 overall.

Payton Blades finished the day with a win in the circle and also went 5-for-7 at the plate with two doubles and two home runs – the first two of her sophomore season. Fellow sophomore Lexie Miller has started on fire at the plate and went 2-for-5 today with three RBI – all which came in game two.

Ryley Whitney also had a solid Sunday performance going 4-for-7 with an RBI and double.

Blades earned the win in game one to improve to 3-0 overall, Courtney Patterson was the tough luck loser in game two, falling to 0-2 in her rookie season.

Game one: Campbellsville 1, USC Beaufort 0

Blades did it all in game one in the circle and at the plate but Campbellsville's defense was solid behind her. Tossing a five-hitter and striking out four to go the distance, Blades didn't allow a free pass.

The offense came from Blades' bat with a solo shot in the fifth – which was her first of the season and day.

Game two: Martin Methodist 8, Campbellsville 7

The second game on Sunday looked to play the same tune after Blades squared up the first pitch of the day to delivered her second homer in as many at bats. CU took a three-run lead after Miller drove in Riley Hurst and Tori Humphrey

The RedHawks picked up a pair of two-out runs off starter Aleigha Talsma in the third and scored a total of six two-our runs overall.

With CU leading 3-2 after four, the Lady Tigers extended their lead to two runs, 4-2, after Miller drove in Ryley Whitney's pinch-runner, Sky Keown, from second base.

Then the bottom of the inning went to the RedHawks. Patterson relieved Talsma after a leadoff walk and two one-out doubles scoring two runs. Tied at four, Patterson allowed the go-ahead run after an RBI single by pinch-hitter Keaton Barnes.

In the sixth, the Lady Tigers answered right back. Sam McKee singled to start the rally and moved to second on a sac bunt by Dana Adkins. Blades then doubled to left-center to score McKee and later scored on an RBI single Mia Aldridge. After Aldridge stole second with two outs, Whitney followed with an RBI single to center to put CU ahead, 7-5.

The lead didn't last though and Martin Methodist scored all its runs in the sixth with two outs. Blades entered into the circle and allowed three-straight extra base hits, including a two-run homer by Samantha King to tie the game at 7-all. Patterson re-entered from the flex position and allowed the game-winner to fellow pitcher Maddi Locke.
