Coastal Georgia's third inning grand slam upends Lady Tigers in NFCA Classic finale

COLUMBUS, Ga. — A grand slam in the fourth inning propelled Coastal Georgia to a 5-1 win over Campbellsville in the finale of the NFCA NAIA Leadoff Classic.

The homer by Paige Alt came in the third and turned a 1-0 Campbellsville (8-5) lead into a 4-1 deficit – the Lady Tigers never did recover.

Alt tallied four of the nine hits for Coastal Georgia – one off each pitcher the Lady Tigers threw out.

Aleigha Talsma (2-2) fell victim to the loss after only lasting three innings with a walk and hit-by-pitch leading to the grand slam. Courtney Patterson relieved her in the circle tossing two innings and allowing one run off five hits. Karson Williams entered for the final two innings and worked clean innings.

The Lady Tigers picked up a 1-0 lead in the second inning after Hannah Judd doubled to centerfield and scored on a Madison Davis sac fly. That was all CU could muster.

Coastal Georgia took its first lead on the grand slam after starting the inning with a single, hit-by-pitch and walk to load the bases.

Patterson got herself in jams in the fourth and fifth innings with the bases loaded in each and only allowing one run.

The CU offense was sat down 1-2-3 in the fourth and fifth before Tori Humphrey singled to start the sixth. But Ryley Whitney grounded into a 4-6-3 double play.

Hailey Dickerson tossed seven innings of five hit ball while striking out six. She faced one above the minimum in the final four innings.

Campbellsville will now head to Gulf Shores for six games at the Gulf Shores Sportsplex. CU will play Judson University on Tuesday, March 3 at 2 p.m. ET for a doubleheader.
