Solid pitching and timely hitting leads Lady Tigers to Gulf Coast Invitational sweep

GULF SHORES — Payton Blades twirled a gem in game one against Blue Mountain College while Karson Williams and Katy Chadwell teamed up in game two against Martin Methodist to finish the Gulf Coast Invitational.

The 13th-ranked Lady Tigers won 6-1 over the Toppers and 5-3 over the RedHawks improving their record to 12-7 overall and sweeping the Gulf Coast Invitational through four games.

Blades (5-1) was near perfect through the first six innings, allowing only two hits overall to the Toppers before a two-out walk came around to score on a few pinch-hit singles. She went the distance allowing six hits overall and striking out five.

Tori Humphrey went 3-for-3 at the plate with two RBI in game one, while Hannah Judd had a three-run triple sparking Campbellsville once again.

In game two, Williams (1-0) shined in her first start of the year. She went five innings and gave up one earned run off five hits with three strikeouts. Chadwell (1) entered in the sixth and earned a two-inning save in the circle.

Blades followed up her solid start in the circle with a 3-for-4 performance at the plate while driving in two runs. Riley Hurst had two hits and two RBI and Madison Davis earned her first multi-hit game of her young career going 2-for-4.

Game one: Campbellsville 6, Blue Mountain 1

CU took advantage of a leadoff hit-by-pitch to Hannah and played small ball to scratch its first run. David moved Judd with a sacrifice bunt before Sam McKee scored her with a ground out to shortstop.

CU broke it open in the third after a one-out walk sparked the rally. Miller earned the free pass before Humphrey singled to left field and Ryley Whitney has a base knock up the middle to load the bases. After a strikeout by Hurst, Judd cleared the bases with her second triple of the week to right-center.

In the sixth, the Lady Tigers picked up a few insurance runs off a Humphrey doubles to left-center -- once again, it started with a leadoff walk and hit-by-pitch to Adkins and McKee. After a Blades sacrifice bunt and Lexi Miller ground out, Humphrey deliverer a two-out double to put CU ahead, 6-0.

Blades got into some trouble in the seventh with two outs and allowed her first free passes on a two-out walk and hit-by-pitch but wiggled out of trouble.

Game two: Campbellsville 5, Martin Methodist

Errors seemed to haunt Campbellsville early as Williams did her job, but the defense let her down. Two miscues in the first inning turned into an unearned run for the RedHawks putting them ahead, 1-0.

After the one-out errors, Williams struck out a pair of batters to start a streak of sitting down 11-straight.

CU settled nicely into the chilly night at the Gulf Shores Sportsplex and the offense picked up Williams. In the third, Miller picked up a one-out single then stole second to setup a Whitney walk. With runners on first and second with two outs, Hurst doubled to the warning track in left field to score two CU runs put the Lady Tigers ahead, 2-1.

The fourth inning was another run producing frame that started with a leadoff single by Davis. Adkins moved her with a sacrifice bunt then Paige Dabney earned a one-out pinch-hit single – the first of the year for Dabney – to put runners on first and second with one out. Blades then followed with a double down the left field line to put CU ahead, 3-1.

Martin Methodist started to rally in the fifth but Williams worked out of the jam. The RedHawks had three hits in the inning but were only able to plate a run on a sacrifice fly by Sydney Gilliam.

Leading 4-2, CU extended its lead with two more runs in the sixth – a RBI single by Blades and double by Humphrey.

Chadwell entered the circle for Campbellsville in the sixth and allowed her first earned run of the season but worked out of the jam. In the seventh, the RedHawks had the game-winning run at the plate but Raegan Hannah became the lone strikeout victim by Chadwell securing her first-career save.
