Warner sweeps Lady Tigers to complete Florida road trip

LAKE WALES, Fla. — It wasn't the ending to the first road trip of the season Campbellsville University softball had in mind as Warner University swept the Lady Tigers on Saturday morning.

Picking up in game one where they left off on Thursday night, the 19th-ranked Royals beat CU 5-3. In game two, Campbellsville led 5-2 entering the fifth inning but Warner scored nine-unanswered runs to win 11-5.

The losses drop the Lady Tigers to 2-4 overall, while Warner improved to 6-0 to begin the year – including two series wins over Mid-South Conference foes in CU and University of the Cumberlands.

Game one: Warner 5, Campbellsville 3

Campbellsville took a 1-0 lead on Thursday night after Lexi Miller drove in Payton Blades with an RBI single in the first inning. Warner answered against starting pitcher Katy Chadwell (0-1) with a one-out triple scoring out on a ground out.

The Royals scored three runs in the third after a leadoff walk and dropped fly ball turned into a pair of RBI singles for Breyonna Shell and Sara Bruno. Warner tacked on a run in the fifth after Shell delivered her third RBI with a sac fly to score after the second triple of the game for Katelyn Richards.

The Lady Tigers answered in the sixth before the rain came as Ryley Whitney hit a leadoff solo homer – her second of the year – to left field. Trailing, 5-2, CU had two more base runners on via walks but couldn't muster anymore offense.

When the game was picked up on Saturday morning, the Lady Tigers had a single by Mia Aldridge, Madison Davis was hit-by-pitch and Tori Humphrey reached on an error, but CU was only able to score one run with the bases loaded and no outs.

Chadwell earned the loss after going five innings and allowed three earned runs with two strikeouts.

Game two: Warner 11, Campbellsville 5

The Lady Tigers had all the momentum leading 5-2 after four innings. CU started the game with four straight singles, including an RBI hit by Whitney scoring Riley Hurst to put CU ahead 1-0. But a line-out double play ended the rally after Tori Humphrey smoked a ball to the first basement, who then doubled-off Whitney at first.

The Lady Tigers scored another run in the second after Hannah Judd doubled and was followed with an RBI single by Keely Bowling. But once again, the Lady Tigers leave the bases loaded and only scored one run.

In the third and fourth innings, respectively, CU took advantage of sloppy pitching by Kara Bradley and scored three runs. Bowling had another RBI single in the third and she was followed with RBIs by Lexi Miller and Judd in the fourth.

In the fifth, Blades got into trouble allowing a leadoff triple and then a dropped foul ball let the flood gates open. Warner chased Blades and Karson Williams out of the inning without recording an out and Courtney Patterson was left to clean up the mess.

Overall, Warner brought 14 batters to the plate, had 10 hits, took advantage of one walk and an error to score nine runs.
