Lady Tigers walk off to win sixth Mid-South Conference Tournament Championship

COLUMBIA, Ky. — A solo home run by Madison Davis tied it in the sixth and a pair of wild pitches scored Sam McKee in the bottom of the seventh inning as Campbellsville University softball walked off Georgetown College to win the Mid-South Conference Tournament Championship, 6-5.

The win gives Campbellsville (40-11) its sixth MSC Tournament trophy and the last two have both been walks off against Georgetown – four years a part as both were on May 8th. Campbellsville has won the tournament in 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2016, 2018 and 2021.

Georgetown took a 1-0 lead after a half inning after Madie Sims drove in Sabrina Sizemore with a two-out single to left. The Lady Tigers answered in the home half with four runs to lead, 4-1. Mia Aldridge hit her seventh home run of the season – a two-run shot – before Hannah Judd scored Payton Blades with a shot to the right-center wall and Davis scored Judd with a double down the left field line.

Georgetown answered in the third and tied it, 4-4. Karson Williams didn't have her best stuff in the circle as four straight hits turned into RBI doubles by Kaylyn Barnett and Sims.

Williams didn't make it out of the fifth before Coach Shannon Wathen went to ace Katy Chadwell with two runners on and no outs. Chadwell picked up two quick outs but an RBI single by Annie Campbell put the Tigers ahead, 5-4.

That's where it would stand until the sixth inning. Chadwell sat down the Georgetown Tigers 1-2-3 on six pitches in the frame and that setup Davis' third home run against Georgetown on the year. It was a solo shot on a 2-2 count and the no-doubter tied it at 5-all.

In the top of the seventh, Chadwell allowed a two-out single by Sims – her third of the day - but Georgetown couldn't muster any offense.

The fireworks came in the home half of the frame as Tori Humphrey picked up just her second hit of the tourney with a double to right-center. Her pinch-runner, Sam McKee, advanced to third on a wild pitch by Sarah Claxon and then scored on a second wild pitch that started the dog pile at home plate.

Claxon allowed 11 hits and five earned runs while striking out two in the 115-pitch performance. Williams went four innings for CU and struck out two batters while allowing five earned runs. Chadwell (20-4) earned the win after tossing three innings and allowing only two base runners.

Aldridge was 2-for-3 with two RBI and extended her on-base streak to 31-straight games. Davis also went 2-for-3 with two RBI as both had home runs and doubles.

With Georgetown beating Lindsey Wilson in the Loser's bracket finals, the Tigers earn the second automatic bid from the Mid-South Conference to the national tournament. Lindsey Wilson will earn an at-large bid after finishing the regular season ranked No. 5 and Campbellsville obviously earns the third bid from the MSC.

The NAIA Opening Round Selection Show will air on Tuesday on the NAIA's Facebook Page at 5 p.m. ET.
