Stellar pitching and explosive hitting give Lady Tigers sweep at NFCA NAIA Leadoff Classic

COLUMBUS, Ga. – The #10 Campbellsville Lady Tigers returned to the diamond today in the NFCA NAIA Leadoff Classic. The Lady Tigers swept the day with wins against #16 William Carey University and (RV) Indiana University Southeast.

Game one: Campbellsville 1, William Carey 0

When the game began, William Carey did not waste time getting their first runner on base as Katy Chadwell gave up a walk to the leadoff batter. Chadwell was able to reign in her focus and she was able to strike out the side, leaving a runner at second. The Lady Tigers were not able to get much in the first besides a single by Ryley Whitney

William Carey once again had their leadoff batter on base, but Chadwell and the defense were able to keep the offense quiet. Campbellsville was not able to do anything in the bottom of the second and they were set down in order.

Chadwell was handling William Carey very well as she only gave up a single once again in the top of the third inning. The Lady Tigers started to come alive as Lexi Miller reached base with a one out single. Miller was then able to steal second after a strikeout by teammate Riley Hurst. Campbellsville kept the line moving as Ashby Murt reached on an infield single and advanced Miller up to third. Whitney then singled to right field and would drive in the only run of the ball game. Chadwell was able to overcome giving up a single and fielder's choice in the top of the fourth. The Lady Tigers would be retired in order in the bottom of the inning.

Chadwell had not felt much pressure in the game until the top of the fifth. She had given up back-to-back singles and had no outs. She did not let this get to her as she recorded to straight fielder's choice outs to third base and forced a ground out to end the inning. The Lady Tigers were only able to pick up a Riley Hurst single in the bottom of the fifth. Chadwell was pitching well and in the sixth inning picked up her fifth strikeout and retired William Carey in order for the first time. Campbellsville was shut down in the bottom of the inning as Sam McKee was only able to reach base on a drop third strike.

Chadwell was pitching a gem, but William Carey was not done trying to attack. William Carey picked up a leadoff single. The Lady Tigers defense stepped up and got a fielder's choice to keep only one runner on. Chadwell got a little wild and hit William Carey's batter to put runners at first and second. The defense helped out again as they were able to get a fielder's choice bang bang play at first. Now, there are runners at first and second and Chadwell was able to finish out the game by picking up her sixth strikeout.

Game two: Campbellsville 8 Indiana University Southeast 0

The Lady Tigers did not waste any time in the second game of the day getting on the board first. Riley Hurst took the first pitch of the game and singled into left. Hurst then stole second while Lexi Miller was at the plate. Miller and Ryley Whitney drew back-to-back walks to load the bases. Madison Davis got the scoring started as she reached base on an infield single driving in Hurst. Keely Bowling added to the lead by driving in two more runs on a single into right field. Sam McKee also singled to left and drove in another Lady Tiger run. Hadlee Carter did not want to be left out of the action and she also picked up an RBI with a single in the infield. The Lady Tigers sent 10 batters to the plate in the top of the first with five of them coming all the way around to score.

Courtney Patterson would start in the circle for game two of the day. She was able to keep the Grenadiers off the board by stranding runners at first and third despite an error in the inning. The Lady Tigers were able to add on to their five run lead in the top of the second as Miller reached base on error, she then stole second, and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Davis was able to bring Miller in with a ground out to the shortstop. Patterson came back out and she was able to set down the Grenadiers 1-2-3.

Campbellsville would only muster a single in the top of the third. Patterson continued to dominate and would retire IU Southeast in order once again. The Lady Tigers continued their offensive barrage with Hurst reaching base on an error by the third baseman. Miller would come up and hit a double deep into right field which would score Hurst all the way from first. Miller was then able to cross the plate due to two consecutive passed balls by the Grenadiers' catcher.

Patterson would continue her pitching prowess in the bottom of the fourth. She would strand runners at first and third once again in the inning. The Lady Tigers would bring in a pinch hitter for Ryleigh Oldham. Taylor Windell would pick up a single and a steal. Campbellsville would then turn to Allison Bush to finish off the game. Bush gave up a single to the Grenadiers, but would not let that stop her as she would pick up a strikeout and complete the shutout for The Lady Tigers.

Campbellsville will take the field once again tomorrow morning at 9 a.m. ET as they will take on (RV) Aquinas College to finish their time at the NFCA NAIA Leadoff Classic.
