WILLIAMSBURG, Ky. – The Campbellsville Lady Tigers traveled to Williamsburg, Kentucky, to participate in the first day of play in the Iceburg Classic on Friday. The Lady Tigers took on the University of Rio Grande and Taylor University. The Lady Tigers fell to the Red Storm in game one, 2-1, and Taylor University in game two, 6-4.
GAME ONE: Campbellsville 1, Rio Grande 2
Katy Chadwell opened in the circle to begin the game. The Lady Tigers quickly retired the first three Rio Grande batters in three up, three down fashions. Emily Reynolds reached base with a single through the right side to begin the bottom half, stealing second to move into scoring position. Lindsey Mitchell followed with a single of her own, sending a pitch to right field and scoring Reynolds.
Much like the first inning, the Lady Tigers put away the next three batters for Rio Grande. Keely Bowling started the bottom of the second, reaching base with a single to right center. With the help of Kaeleigh Tuck, Bowling advanced to scoring position at second base. Unfortunately, Bowling was left stranded when the final out was made.
Rio Grande put their first runner of the game on base to begin the third inning but couldn't find a way to capitalize. The bottom of the third went quickly for the Lady Tigers. Reynolds reached base with a single up the middle but couldn't make her way across the plate.
To begin the top of the fourth, Rio Grande worked to cut into the Lady Tiger's one-run lead, putting several runners on base. The Lady Tigers got the lead runner, keeping the Red Storm from scoring. Campbellsville was put away quickly to move into the top of the fifth inning.
After Rio Grande sent a pitch to right field to put another runner on base, Ellie Coley came to the circle to relieve Chadwell in the top of the fifth. Using intelligent plays to get the lead runner, the Lady Tigers continued to hold a 1-0 lead over the Red Storm. Jessie Daniels singled up the middle in the bottom half but was left on base to end the inning.
The Lady Tigers put away the Red Storm in another three up, three down inning to begin the sixth. Caroline Pitcock opened the bottom half with a single up the middle but was picked off.
Rio Grande sent the tying run across the plate at the top of the seventh after reaching base via walk and singling up the middle. After a fielder's choice and two more hits, the Red Storm loaded the bases with two outs. The go-ahead run was sent home after another reached base via walk. The Lady Tigers made the final out, but not before they trailed Rio Grande 2-1. Morgan Carter doubled to left field in the bottom half of the inning, and Callie Webb came in to pinch run. On a sacrifice bunt from Bowling, Webb advanced into scoring position. Unfortunately, the Lady Tigers couldn't capitalize with a runner on base and fell to the Red Storm, 2-1.
Reynolds led the way for the Lady Tigers with two hits. While the Lady Tigers fell to the Red Storm, Campbellsville led with a .600 OPS to their .593.
GAME TWO: Campbellsville 4, Taylor 6
Caroline Pitcock singled through the left side to begin the game but was left on base when the final out was recorded. The Trojans reached base on an infield error and quickly added a run to their side of the scoreboard with a triple sent to the center field fence. With a passed ball, the Trojans extended their lead to two runs over the Lady Tigers. After another pitch was sent to left field and two runners landed on base, Courtney Patterson came to the circle to relieve Reynolds. Before the final out was made, the Trojans added two more runs to their lead.
In the top of the second, Taylor Windell singled to left center to reach base but was left stranded to move into the bottom half.
The third inning went quickly, with both teams being put away in three up, three down.
With already two outs in the top of the fourth inning, Carter sent a pitch to center field to land a double. Bowling followed with a single of her own, advancing Carter to third base. Windell reached base via walk, leaving the bases loaded. Kaeleigh Tuck answered with a double to right field, scoring Carter and Bowling and cutting the Trojans' lead to two runs. The final out of the top half was recorded, leaving Windell and Tuck on base. In the bottom half, the Trojans managed to add one more run to extend their lead to 5-2.
To begin the fifth, the Lady Tigers were put away in another three up, three down inning. An infield error helped the Trojans put a runner on base, advancing to second and scoring on a single up the middle. The Lady Tigers trailed the Trojans 6-2 to move into the sixth inning.
At the top of the sixth inning, the Lady Tigers retired quickly. The Trojans looked to add to their lead but couldn't capitalize with runners on base. Tuck sent a pitch up the middle to reach base, and Jessie Daniels followed with a double of her own, scoring Tuck. Reynolds sent Daniels across the plate with a single to left field. The Lady Tigers' attempt came up short when the final out was made. Campbellsville fell to the Trojans, 6-4.
Tuck led the way for Campbellsville with two hits. The Lady Tigers struggled to capitalize with runners on base, leaving four runners on base.
The Lady Tigers will be back in action on Saturday, February 24th, for the second day of the Iceburg Classic in Williamsburg, Kentucky. Campbellsville will take on Taylor University and the University of Northwestern Ohio. The games are set to begin at 12 p.m. ET and 2:30 p.m. ET.
