GULF SHORES, Ala. – The (RV) Lady Tigers battled the #6 University of Science and Arts Drovers and the Thomas University Night Hawks in their first day of competition at the 2024 NAIA and the University of Mobile Gulf Coast Invitational. The Lady Tigers finished with one loss and one victory, suffering a nine-run run-rule to the Drovers before flipping the script on the Night Hawks and run ruling them.
GAME ONE: Campbellsville 2, Science and Arts 11
Science and Arts began the top of the first with two singles resulting in the game's first run. Campbellsville's portion of the first inning ended shortly, as the Lady Tigers were quickly struck out.
The Drovers began the top of the second, expanding their lead to seven runs, while the Lady Tigers could still not make it across the plate. Much like the first, Campbellsville was put away in three up, three down fashion.
Science and Arts finished their share of the third with one batter left on base, unable to make it across the plate before being put away. The Lady Tigers' bottom of the third ended with no runs in their favor.
In the opening of the fourth inning, the Drovers racked up three back-to-back runs, reaching double digits on the scoreboard. Science and Arts collected several hits, resulting in another run in their favor. Caroline Pitcock opened the bottom of the fourth with a free base, but unfortunately, she did not make it across the plate to score for Campbellsville.
The Drovers ended their share of the fifth inning with one batter left on base but could not score any runs. Keely Bowling put the Lady Tigers on the scoreboard with a 2-RBI home run to left center.
Morgan Carter and Bowling collected one hit each for Campbellsville. Courtney Patterson, McKenzie Miller, and Ellie Conley worked together and sat down six batters, but the starting Science & Arts' pitcher struck out nine herself. The Lady Tigers simply couldn't connect with the ball, hitting twice to the Drovers' ten.
GAME TWO: Campbellsville 10, Thomas 2
Seeking to turn things around in the later game, Campbellsville opened the first inning with a double from Jessie Daniels and a hit-by-pitch from Pitcock. Unfortunately, as their share of the inning ended, neither Lady Tiger managed to score. During Thomas' bottom of the first, they scored the game's first run.
Bowling and Kaeleigh Tuck singled during the top of the second, but neither made it across the plate before switching with the Night Hawks. Much like Campbellsville, Thomas did not manage to score during the bottom of the second.
Lindsey Mitchell singled, resulting in Daniels scoring the first run for the Lady Tigers. Emily Reynolds finished the top of the third, scoring on a wild pitch, bringing Campbellsville to the lead. The Night Hawks tied the score after grounding out to third base, closing the third inning.
The top of the fourth inning was highlighted by Daniels, Conkright, and Tuck crossing the plate, widening their lead on the scoreboard. Thomas was swiftly put away by the Lady Tigers in three up, three down style, bringing the bottom of the fourth to a quick end.
Carter opened the sixth inning, earning a free base. Bowling and Taylor Windell each collected an RBI, resulting in back-to-back runs for Campbellsville. Shortly after, Conkright and Daniels brought two more runs for the Lady Tigers across the plate, promptly reaching double digits on the scoreboard. Two Night Hawks singled during their share of the fifth, but neither reached the plate before the end of the inning.
Daniels and Bowling led Campbellsville with three hits each and Katy Chadwell struck out one batter, limiting Thomas to two runs. The Lady Tigers led the Night Hawks with a 1.378 OPS (on-base slugging percentage) compared to .550 and one stolen base to their zero.
The Lady Tigers will be back in action, on their third day in Gulf Shores, Alabama battling the Texas A&M University-San Antonio Jaguars at 10:00 a.m. ET.
