CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky.- The Lady Tigers hosted the #4 University of the Cumberlands Patriots for a second doubleheader this weekend and the final home game of the season. Campbellsville finished the day with two losses against Cumberlands.
GAME ONE: Campbellsville 10, Cumberlands 14
The Patriots began the game with three runs during the top of the first. They loaded their bases, unable to reach home once more before switching sides with the Lady Tigers. Jessie Daniels opened for Campbellsville with a single to left field. The Lady Tigers were yet to score as the end of the inning approached.
Much like the first, Cumberlands collected three runs throughout their portion of the second. Campbellsville was swiftly put away in three up, three down fashion during the bottom of the inning.
The Patriots' top of the third was highlighted by two back-to-back home runs to left and center field. Lindsey Mitchell put the Lady Tigers on the scoreboard with a three-run home run. Taylor Windell followed Mitchell's footsteps with a two-run home run to right field. Camille Conkright, Kaeleigh Tuck, and Morgan Carter loaded Campbellsville's bases. Daniels brought in four runs with a grand slam, tying the score at nine.
Cumberlands reclaimed their lead with a single, scoring another run in their favor at the top of the fourth. Although the Lady Tigers collected a couple of hits throughout their share of the inning, they were unable to score before the end, switching sides with the Patriots.
With another three-run home run down the left field line, Cumberlands continued to expand their advantage to four runs ahead of Campbellsville at the top of the fifth. Daniels earned a free base via walk, followed by a single to left field by Reynolds, but neither made it home before the end of the inning was recorded.
The Patriots doubled to left field, scoring another run, before being put away and closing the top of the sixth. Carter and Windell made back-to-back hits, followed by Tuck singling down the right field line, resulting in another run for the Lady Tigers.
Despite singling to left field, Cumberlands did not score at the top of the seventh. Reynolds singled to left field in the opening of the bottom of the seventh. With two free bases, Keely Bowling and Mitchell loaded Campbellsville's bases. However, the Lady Tigers could not cross the dish before the end of the game was recorded.
Both teams collected three home runs each throughout the game. Despite their defeat, Campbellsville surpassed the Patriots in a couple of statistical categories: left on base (11-8), walks (5-3), and assists (11-7). Daniels led the Lady Tigers with three hits and four RBIs, while Reynolds struck out three Cumberlands' batters.
GAME TWO: Campbellsville 2, Cumberland 7
Both teams put each other away quickly in three up, three down style throughout the first inning of the game.
Although one Patriot batter singled to center field, they were unable to score before the end of the top of the second. Mitchell made the Lady Tigers first on the scoreboard, scoring on a wild pitch.
Cumberlands made it to the scoreboard during the top of the third. Mitchell reclaimed Campbellsville's lead with a single to center field, bringing Daniels across the dish.
One Patriot batter remained on base at the end of the top of the fourth, unable to score. The Lady Tigers could not score during their share of the inning either, getting put away in three up, three down fashion.
As the fifth inning began, Cumberlands caught up with Campbellsville singling up the middle. The Patriots gained momentum, surpassing the Lady Tigers and collecting two more runs in their favor. Cumberlands only continued to amplify their lead to a five-run advantage with a three-run home run. Much like the fourth, Campbellsville was put away in three up, three down style during the bottom of the fifth.
Both teams put each other away quickly in three up, three down fashion throughout the sixth inning.
The Patriots began the final inning, reaching first base via walk. However, they did not manage to score any further before the Lady Tigers stepped up to bat. Campbellsville was once again put away in three up, three down style, losing the second game.
Mitchell led the Lady Tigers with two hits and one RBI, while Katy Chadwell and Ellie Coley worked together, striking out two Cumberlands' batters.
The Lady Tigers will be back in action, traveling to Bowling Green, Kentucky, for the Mid-South Conference Championship on Thursday, May 2nd.
