Slone, Kubwimana claim titles at Millikin Open

DECATUR, Ill. – The #5-ranked Campbellsville University men's wrestling team put on a clinical display Saturday at the Millikin Open, asserting itself as the day's top program. The Tigers posted a 67-31 combined match record, translating to a 0.6837 winning percentage—the best of any team at the event with 15 or more matches. #2 Shad Slone (174 lbs.) and #5 Jasitin Kubwimana (165 lbs.) both claimed individual titles for the Tigers.

At 174 lbs., #2-ranked Shad Slone tore through the bracket. He opened with a 47-second fall , followed by a 21-5 technical fall. Slone then pinned his quarterfinal opponent in just 21 seconds and secured a 15-0 technical fall in the semis to punch his ticket to the final.

There, he met teammate Kaiden Bates, who carved his own path with a 1:28 fall, a 16-4 major decision, a 7-2 decision, and a 14-2 major decision. Slone ultimately took the title via medical forfeit over Bates.

The 165 lbs. bracket followed a similar script. #5-ranked Jasitin Kubwimana advanced to the final with two technical falls (16-1 and 17-2), a 12-2 major decision, and a 10-5 decision in the semifinal.

He was joined by #16-ranked Jake Hurst, who earned his spot with a 45-second fall, a 19-2 technical fall, an injury default win, and a 4-2 decision. Kubwimana claimed the championship via medical forfeit over Hurst.

#4 Izaeah Beavers (133 lbs.) took third place. He opened with 15-0 and 16-0 technical falls and an 11-2 major decision before narrowly falling 8-5 in sudden victory in the semifinals. Beavers bounced back to win the third-place match, 11-8, also in sudden victory.

#5 Nik Yancey (149 lbs.) also secured third place. Yancey advanced to the semis with a decision, a 14-5 major, and a 1:53 fall. Like Beavers, he lost a tight 8-5 sudden-victory match in the semifinals, but won his third-place match by medical forfeit.

#4 Antwaun Burns (157 lbs.) finished 4th. He won his first three matches, including a 16-1 technical fall, before dropping a 4-2 decision in the semifinals and ultimately falling in the third-place match.

Campbellsville's depth rounded out the day. The 157 lbs. bracket saw #24 Anthony Joseph take fifth place, winning a 19-6 major decision in his consolation semi.

At 197 lbs., freshman Ashton Boswell and Pete Kolomiyets both made impressive consolation runs to share sixth place. After losing his second match, Boswell ripped off five straight wins, including four consecutive technical falls. Peter Kolomiyets also battled back with four straight wins (three falls and a major) before the pair double-forfeited the fifth-place match.

TJ Meyer (141 lbs.) finished fifth, Sam Bertin (285 lbs.) placed sixth, and #22 Bryant Beane (141 lbs.) took seventh.
