CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. – Emma Markham,
Leah Holland, and
Ellie Coley dominated Friday as Campbellsville beat Cumberland University 5-0 in game one and 2-1 in game two of their final home games of the year.
- Emma Markham was lights out, only giving up four hits, and punching out seven in the first game.
- Senior Korey Harris led with three hits, scored twice, and drove in one.
- Ellie Coley entered game two in relief, picking up the win and tossing three innings.
- With the wins, Campbellsville already clinched the series; they look to sweep tomorrow morning at 10 a.m. ET.
GAME ONE: Campbellsville 5, Cumberland 0
Senior
Emma Markham took the ball to open the series with Cumberland University. She quickly retired the side, picking up her first strikeout victim.
Korey Harris led off the offensive side with a hit by pitch and would later score on a two-out single by
Karleigh Walker. In the second, Campbellsville got two quick outs before two Phoenix runners reached base. Markham struck out her second batter to end the potential threat.
The Tigers quickly loaded the bases with one out after
Hannah Hackworth and
Rylee Warner were plunked, and
Ashlan Estep walked. Harris delivered her first hit of the game into left field, scoring Hackworth.
Lydia Jones followed suit with an RBI-groundout, plating Warner. Campbellsville scored two runs on one hit.
The pitching duel would continue in the third with all six batters being retired. In the fourth, a leadoff hit was retired after Jones and Harris twisted a double play up the middle. Warner and Harris kept the momentum alive at the plate with a pair of singles but were stranded on the bases. Campbellsville maintained its 3-0 lead through four innings.
In the fifth frame, Markham continued to mow down the opposition. She put the side away in order, striking out another batter. The Lady Tiger added an insurance run in the home half.
Macy McCoy singled to right field with one out and then scored from first after a shot in the gap from
Madison Reed. Reed advanced to third on the throw but was left on the bases.
The senior pitcher for CU continued to be electric in the sixth, striking out two and keeping Cumberland off the scoreboard.
Rylee Warner led off the bottom of the sixth with a moon shot out to centerfield. Campbellsville went down quietly before shutting the door in the seventh. Markham would end the seventh with a seventh punchout, capping off the complete game shutout.
GAME TWO: Campbellsville 2, Cumberland 1
Game two was very different and a hard-fought, even matchup between the two clubs.
Leah Holland got the nod in game two and quickly got out of the first inning. Harris got things rolling with a single up the middle, stealing second with one out.
Jessie Daniels passed the bat with a single into left field, putting the Tigers on the corners. A bunt from Walker caught the Phoenix defense asleep, allowing Harris to score on the sacrifice. Campbellsville took the 1-0 advantage early.
Holland, with the lead, was filling up the strike zone and letting her defense make plays. A pair of hits for Cumberland threatened, but a pair of outs were induced from the right-hander to end the potential. A pair of Tigers also reached base in the home half but were left on base. In the top of the third, a defensive miscue allowed a runner on, but no harm was done after the defense made three straight plays to get out of the jam. Campbellsville followed suit, and the game remained 1-0.
In the fourth, Cumberland tied the game, scoring one run on two hits. The Lady Tigers threatened in the bottom but stranded two runners aboard.
Ellie Coley entered in relief and quickly left a runner on base in her first inning of work. The bats would back the pitching half, taking the lead in the home half of the fifth.
Ashlan Estep singled and moved into scoring position after a Harris sac bunt. Daniels came through with a clutch single up the middle, plating Estep. Campbellsville led 2-1 through five innings of play.
The sixth and seventh innings finished quickly as nine of the last ten batters went down in order. Holland threw four innings, only giving up four hits and one run.
Ellie Coley threw three innings in relief, only allowing two runners to reach base.
