CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. – For the first time in program history, a Campbellsville University player has been named the Mid-South Conference West Division Defensive Player of the Year. That honor goes to senior linebacker Daniel DeLeon, who leads Campbellsville with 84 tackles, headlines a list of 13 All-MSC Fighting Tigers.
"Daniel is deserving of his honor. He plays on a very good defense and has had a great year. Many of our guys could have been in the picture for this award," CU head coach Perry Thomas said. "We play in a tough division, and they have battled hard to give our guys the opportunity to compete. The team representation overall is what I would expect for the co-champions. One great thing is many of these guys will be returning next year."
DeLeon is tied for sixth in the conference with six sacks and seventh in the MSC with 14 tackles for a loss. He is eighth in the Mid-South averaging 8.4 tackles per game. DeLeon ranks 38th in sacks and 40th in tackles for a loss in the NAIA.
MSC West co-champion Campbellsville leads MSC with 10 First Teams selections, including six defensive players.
Senior linebacker Blake Young, junior defensive backs James Gardner and Percy Minor and defensive line selections Stephon Tanga and Dakwain Tarrance joined DeLeon.
On offense, senior receivers Demytreus Gipson and Trevon Chatman were joined by offensive lineman Andrew Vaughn. Junior kicker Will Ward was also named a first team selection.
Senior quarterback Jacob Russell was named the second team quarterback and was joined by running back A.J. Strong and center Blake Cordell.
Young is second on the Tigers' defense with 83 tackles, allowing him to break the CU career tackles record (356) and career solo tackles (196). He also has two blocked kicks, adding to his career-record nine blocks.
Tanga leads CU with four forced fumbles, which ties a single-season record and ranks fifth in the NAIA. Tarrance is No. 8 in the nation for sacks per game (0.900) with 8.5 sacks in 10 games. His 15 tackles for a loss ranks 31st in the NAIA.
Minor and Gardner each had four interceptions to lead CU's secondary during the regular season.
Gipson and Chatman are in a race for CU's single-season touchdown receptions (11) and reception yards (1,009) records. Gipson, who has broken the career reception yards (2,423) and career touchdown receptions (27) this season, had 10 touchdown catches and 936 yards during the regular season. Chatman has nine touchdowns and 947 yards. Chatman also broke the CU single-game (12) and single-season (69) receptions record. The duo ranks second and third in the MSC for receiving yards and yards per game.
Â
Vaughn started each game he played this season on the O-Line, while Ward came off the bench to take over the kicking duties in game two of the season, kicking an MSC-best nine field goals and converting 26-of-28 point after touchdown kicks.
Russell broke more than a dozen program records in his 10 games as CU quarterback, including single-season pass completions (222), pass attempts (372), yards passing (2,814), touchdown passes (26), single-game passing yards (414), single-game passing touchdowns (5) and the longest pass play in program history – a 97-yard touchdown pass to Gipson in the season opener.
Strong led CU's rushing attack with 321 yards in eight games. He scored five touchdowns in CU's last three games, three by ground, one receiving and one on a blocked punt recovery. Cordell started at center for CU all 10 games.
Faulkner quarterback Terrell Robinson was named the MSC West Offensive Player of the Year, while Faulkner running back Joe Jones and Reinhardt (Ga.) defensive back Marcus Miller were selected MSC Freshmen of the Year.
Robinson led the Mid-South in total offense per game (331.0 yards), passing yards per game (286.4) and pass efficiency (163.0). His 26 touchdowns are the most in the West and second best in the Mid-South. Nationally, Robinson is second in passing yards per game and total offense per game.
Thirty players earned first team all-conference honors and 29 were selected second team all-conference as voted on by the coaches. Ties for all-conference teams were not broken.
