KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Campbellsville University junior forward Vernon Payne is an NCCAA Second Team All-American and an NAIA All-America honorable mention selection, the NCCAA and NAIA national offices announced Wednesday.
Payne, a native of Fayetteville, N.C., transferred to CU from Cape Fear Community College. During his first season with the Tigers, Payne led CU with 16.03 points per game, 7.33 rebounds per game and 30 total blocks. Payne scored 20 points or more in 10 games this season, including a 30-point game on Feb. 2 against Rio Grande, followed two days later by a 40-point performance against West Virginia Tech. He had six double-doubles through the course of the season.
Payne was also named a First Team All-Mid-South Conference selection.
Six other Mid-South Conference players received recognition by the NAIA.
NAIA Player of the Year Vic Moses from Georgetown and Jamar Briscoe from Pikeville were the only NAIA First Team All-America selections from the MSC. Lindsey Wilson's Kalen Kimberland and Pikeville's Trevor Setty were Second Team selections. Other MSC players named honorable mention were University of the Cumberlands' Antonio Bumpus and Shawnee State's Tyler Morgan.
Campbellsville finished its season with a 20-12 record and fourth-place finish in the Mid-South Conference regular season.
