GREENVILLE, S.C. – Three Campbellsville University Men's Soccer players have been selected as NCCAA All-Americans with two Tigers also being chosen for NSCAA All-Americans, league officials announced Wednesday, Dec. 11th.
Roraigh Yearwood and
John Kennedy were chosen as NCCAA and NSCAA First Team All-Americans and
Kevon Farquharson was selected on the NCCAA third-team.
"I am very proud of these three and all they have accomplished," said Preston. "Their teammates have put them in a position to succeed and they have made the most of those opportunities."
Yearwood has racked up the most post-season awards in 2013, as he was first chosen as the Mid-South Conference Player of the Year in November. Winning that award is one of his top feats, but being selected as an All-American by the NCCAA league officials and coaches is up there with it. Yearwood was also selected to the NCCAA All-Tournament team.
The London, England native scored a total of 22 goals this season with two of them coming against Houghton College in the NCCAA National Tournament in Kissimmee, Fla. Although Yearwood was the top scorer on the young CU team, he also led the Tigers with nine assists and compiled 53 total points in 2013.
Yearwood finished the season ranked in the top 10 in four NAIA categories:
No. 2 in Total Game Winning Goals (8)
No. 4 in Total Points (53)
No. 5 in Game Winning Goals per Game (0.35)
No. 6 in Total Goals (22)
He also led the Tigers to a No. 1 ranking in all the NAIA with 81 goals scored in 2013.
"Roraigh has been great all year," said Preston. "With his scoring abilities he has showed his unselfishness to pass along to teammates when his shot isn't there has been tremendous. It shows the type of overall player he is becoming."
But in soccer most of the credit goes to the offense and the strikers who score all the goals but the defense plays a huge part as well. That is where center-back
John Kennedy comes into the picture.
The Lochgilphead, Scotland native has been a mainstay in the Tiger defense since 2010. He played in all 23 games this season while helping CU record six shutouts.
Kennedy, who stands at 6-feet-4, also chipped in on the offensive side as he would move up to the front line on all free and corner kicks. With the height advantage, he capitalized on his chances and scored two goals and recorded two assists.
Kennedy has played in 82 games and helped record 24 career shutouts during his stay at CU and today he plans on graduating from Campbellsville University one semester early with a degree in marketing.
His future plans are to extend his career with professional soccer. He plans on attending a few trials when he gets back to Scotland.
"John has been a special part of our program since he stepped foot on campus in 2010," said Preston." With him graduating a semester early, it shows the type of commitment he had to soccer but also academics. That is the type of student-athletes we want on our team. There will always be a piece of John here in our program."
The final Tiger who was selected with post-season honors was Kevon Farquharson. The freshman from St. Elizabeth, Jamaica was chosen on the NCCAA All-America Third Team and was the Tigers second of many threats on the offensive side of the ball. He scored six goals and recorded six assists for a total of 18 points.
The best tool for Farquharson was his dynamite speed. He was able to race past the opposing defenders and use his speed to his advantage.
"I am very excited to see how Kevon commits himself to his off-season workouts and live up to his potential once he is an upperclassman," said Preston.
Campbellsville finished with an 18-4-1 record in 2013 and third place in the MSC behind top five NAIA teams, Rio Grande and Lindsey Wilson. With the bulk of the Tigers offense coming back in 2014, Coach Preston is excited to see how his All-Americans will bond and grow together.
"Losing John will hurt but I am excited to see what the future will hold with Kevon and Roraigh growing and succeeding together. We have a special group and I can't wait till next season."
