CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. — For the first time in program history, a Campbellsville University student-athlete has been named the Mid-South Conference West Division Offensive Player of the Year. That honor goes to senior quarterback Jacob Russell, who has shattered every program record to date this season.
"This is a great honor from the conference coaches," said Russell. "I have been blessed to play this game at different levels and I have found a true home at Campbellsville. The coaches, players, and university as a whole is great. I accept this award on their behalf because without them, this would not be possible."
Russell has led Campbellsville to two-straight MSC West Division championships and NAIA Football Championship Series appearances. He has thrown for 3,537 yards this season and averaged 352.7 yards per game – which ranks No. 1 in the NAIA.
Russell also showed that he isn't afraid to tuck the ball and out of the pocket, rushing for 427 yards and four touchdowns – which are both second on the team.
"This is a tremendous honor," said CU coach Perry Thomas. "Jake has had an exceptional career here at Campbellsville and has led us to two conference championships and two NAIA appearances. But he would be the first to tell you this is a team award because without his linemen blocking and receivers catching the ball, he would not be where he is today."
Throughout the season, Russell has re-wrote the record books nine times with his best game ever as a Tiger in the regular season finale against No. 7 Reinhardt on Senior Day. He threw for 446 yards and rushed for 26 more to reach a career-high 472 total yards. He also launched a career-high seven touchdown passes in the victory.
He is on pace to shatter his own single-season and career passing yards per game average which was set last season at 274.
Russell was named NAIA Player of the Week twice this season and has gained the honor three times in his career. He was also voted on as the MSC Player of the Week four times this season and eight times in his career.
"Everyone sees the great plays and gaudy numbers that Jake consistently produces on Saturday's but what they don't see is his grind and focused pursuit of perfection that takes place during the week," said quarterbacks coach Hunter Cantwell. "There is never a moment that he's not locked in to making himself and this team better. Giving 110% in the weight room, on the practice field and in the film room is second nature for him while  also excelling in the classroom. His tireless pursuits are not just confined to in-season either as Jake has consistently given up his summer breaks to stay in Campbellsville and train while others went home. Jake is truly deserving of this award and I'm happy for him that he is reaping the fruit of his labor. The best compliment I can give Jake is that I know he will use this honor to glorify Jesus Christ and he will continue to give all the credit to his teammates for his success."
