KANSAS CITY, Mo. — After winning the Mid-South Conference West Division title and earning their second-straight NAIA Football Championship Series appearance, seven Fighting Tigers picked up post-season awards from the NAIA and NCCAA.
Russell, who graduated in the December commencement, was named the National Christian College Athletic Association Offensive Player of the Year and a NFCS-NAIA Â Second Team All-American.
Russell finished his senior season by ranking in the Top 6 in five offensive categories. He ranked first by passing for 3,676 yards and averaging 372.6 total yards per game. Russell finished with 38 touchdowns and threw only seven interceptions. Â He shattered every program record in history, making him the most decorated quarterback to come through the program. (See records below)
Russell is the first Fighting Tiger to be named Offensive Player of the Year and second overall, as now-linebackers coach Dwight Houston picked up Defensive Player of the Year honors in 2011.
Russell is the first NAIA All-American for Campbellsville since 2010, when Calvin Bini was named a First Team defensive back. Overall, he is the eighth NAIA All-American in program history.
"Congratulations to Jacob for being named to the All-American team," said CU coach Perry Thomas. "He is well deserving of this award. Being named All-American is a fitting end to his college career. A career that saw him help lead this program to consecutive MSC West titles. This award is also a compliment to the success of full offensive unit and the coaches on that side of the ball."
Speaking of the offensive unit, three others were honored by the NCCAA. Tyus Alcorn, Jarrod Harrington and Blake Cordell were all named to the NCCAA First Team.
Alcorn, a sophomore wide-receiver from Lexington, Ky., broke the single-season mark for touchdown receptions with 19 and also the single-game mark with four against Bethel University on Oct. 17.
Harrington, a senior receiver from Parksville, Ky., complimented Alcorn by catching 81 passes for 1,053 yards and six touchdowns. He was also the biggest all-purpose threat in the country by averaging 181.2 yards per game and recorded 1,993 total yards – both were second in the country.
Cordell, a senior from Elizabethtown, Ky., bolstered a young offensive line at the center position. He helped Campbellsville average 158.8 rushing yards per game – which is the most since 2010.
Campbellsville also had some recognition on the defensive side of the ball. Senior Dekwain Tarrance, Percy Minor and Stephon Tanga all picked up NCCAA honors.
Tarrance was named a first-team defensive lineman with 59 total tackles and a team leading 5.5 sacks. Minor was named a second-team defensive back after finishing third in tackles with 79, first in interceptions with four and first with two fumble recoveries. Tanga, who led the Tigers with 92 tackles, was named NCCAA Honorable Mention.
The Tigers will open the 2016 season with two road games, traveling to University of the Cumberlands on August 27 and University of Pikeville on September 1. Kickoff for the season-opener against the Patriots has not been announced.Â
