Campbellsville University led practically the entire game against No. 18 Freed-Hardeman University, but had to work an extra five minutes to gain a 90-80 overtime victory Saturday in the Powell Athletic Center.
After a Jesse Moulton three tied the score at the end of regulation, the Tigers went on an 18-8 run to close out the game. The run was punctuated by 11-13 free throw shooting (eight by Jermaine Carter) that sealed the win.
"This was a good win for us," said a relieved head coach Keith Adkins. "You've got to look at ranked teams as opportunities."
Freed-Hardeman was the second straight Trans-South Conference opponent to go down to the Tigers. They defeated Union University on Tuesday in Jackson, Tenn.
"This was a good team we beat. They were 5-0 and had beaten Lindsey Wilson, a team from our conference" said Adkins.
Campbellsville led by as many as 16 points on three occasions in the first half but relinquished that and led only 41-35 at the break.
"Sometimes I think we take things for granted," said Adkins. "They got in foul trouble and started subbing and I think we let up a little."
Freed took a 44-43 lead four minutes into the second half, but that is the last time Campbellsville trailed.
The Tigers were led by
Nestor Colmenares' 25 points and 14 rebounds. He was joined in double figures by Jermaine Carter,
T.J. Bishop and
Jordan Benock with 14, 13 and 11 points, respectively. All of Bishop's points came in the second half.
"T.J. came up big for us at Union and Jermaine did tonight," Adkins said. "Your upper classmen are expected to step up like that."
Freed-Hardeman was led by Kyle Teichman's 25 points. Ken Bingham had 17 and Kirtiss Brown 10.
Campbellsville goes on the road for a Tuesday match-up in Portsmouth, Ohio against future Mid-South opponent Shawnee State.
