Oakland City, Ind. is a little off the beaten path and maybe that's why
Campbellsville University's game was a little offbeat Tuesday night.
The Lady Tigers defeated the Lady Oaks 93-72 to run their unbeaten
string to six.
But it didn't come that easy.
"It's hard to come off an emotional win like we had at Bethel (69-67 on
a last-second shot) Saturday night," said coach
Ginger Colvin. "We've
been on the road a long time and I think the girls just wanted to get
home."
Up by 15 in the second half after a
Melly Heaton 3, Oakland City pulled to within eight three times and were down 78-69 with four minutes to go.
But Campbellsville finally found its eye from the free throw line, hitting its last seven, five by
Whitney Ballinger, to put the game away. The Lady Tigers really excelled on the boards where they held a 52-29 advantage - 25 off the offensive glass.
"Our rebounding advantage was the difference in the game," said Colvin.
Both teams committed an almost identical amount of turnovers, 20 for CU and 19 for Oakland City.
Campbellsville was led in scoring by Ballinger with 28 points. She was joined in double figures by
Courtney Danis,
Melly Heaton and Wendy Messer with 18, 17 and 10 points, respectively. Nine Lady Tigers logged double-digit minutes.
The loss dropped Oakland City to 1-2. They were led by Kristi McVey's 14 points.
The Lady Tigers were 16-31 from the line (Ballinger had 17 tries), but hit 14 of those free tosses in the second half. They shot nearly as well from the 3-point line (11-23).
The Lady Tigers play 6-2 McKendree on Friday in their first home game. game time is 7 p.m.
