Perimeter shooting by guards T.J. Bishop and Shawn Savage paced Campbellsville University to a 77-61 road victory over Cumberland University Monday night.
Savage hit back-to-back-to-back 3-pointers to turn a four-point Tiger lead into a 10-point game, 52-42, as Campbellsville reached its first double-figure lead of the game with 11 minutes to play. Savage finished with 22 points to lead Campbellsville off the bench and was 6-of-7 from 3-point range.
Cumberland (3-10) led the first 10 minutes of the game until a trey from Jordan Benock gave the Tigers their first lead, 15-14, with 10:19 to play in the first half. Cumberland answered, but Savage nailed his first 3-pointer of the game to regain the Tigers' lead, 18-16. The Tigers took a 30-25 lead into halftime and did not trail again in the game.
"I told our guys, I think Cumberland's a team that's close to getting it right," CU head coach Keith Adkins said of the struggling TranSouth team. "We wanted to make sure that it didn't happen tonight, and that they didn't turn the corner on us."
The Bulldogs were led by the nation's fourth-best scorer Brandon Springer. Despite having only two field goals, Springer led Cumberland with 21 points.
"He's as good an offensive player or better than we'll face all year," Adkins said. "I thought we defended him hard. I told our guys to be physical with him."
Springer was 9-of-12 from the free throw line.
Bishop joined Savage's 3-point shooting for the Tigers, hitting 3-of-5 from beyond the arc and 8-of-8 from the charity stripe for his 17 points. Nestor Colmenares had 12 points and eight rebounds.
Campbellsville (9-3) is looking for its 10th win of the season when it hosts Temple Baptist College Thursday at 7 p.m. in the Powell Athletic Center.
Thursday will be Military Night, as all military personnel, military families and veterans will be admitted free by showing their military ID.
