Lady Tigers Lose Fight to Columbia College in First Round of NAIA National Tournament

JACKSON, Tenn. - Campbellsville University was outscored 23-12 off 25 turnovers and the Lady Tigers dropped their first game in the NAIA National Tournament 64-60 to Columbia (Mo.) College Thursday morning in Jackson, Tenn.

"When you get to this level of competition your weaknesses are exposed," said coach Ginger Colvin. "We've had a problem with turnovers all year and we did here today."

The loss overshadowed a couple of sterling performances by Whitney Ballinger and Jarobia Hill. Ballinger scored a game-high 27 points and Hill pulled down a game-high 17 rebounds.

"It may not be a national tournament record, but Jarobia battled hard," said Colvin. "I'd like to check our record book and see how she stacks up against other Lady Tigers."

Campbellsville responded to an early wake-up call (playing in the 9 a.m. game) and took an early 8-3 lead. But Columbia reversed that as the Lady Cougars went on a 16-2 run.

When Ballinger hit a free throw at the 6:42 mark of the first half, the Lady Tigers had retaken the lead at 23-22. They eventually went into halftime leading 35-33.

But turnovers continued to mount (13 in the first half) for Campbellsville in the second half. The game was tied for the eighth and last time (42-42) at the 15:45 mark.

Columbia led by as many as six 55-49 and the Lady Tigers took a one-point lead (58-57) when Ballinger banked home a runner off a steal by Kristi Ensminger with 3:44 to go in the game.

"They took away what we were successful with early when they didn't let us get inside with the ball," Colvin said. "We were tired at the end and made some terrible mental mistakes."

"We're young (only one senior), though," continued Colvin. "You can sit in the stands and say you'll make this play or that, but until you've been in a game at Jackson ... well, it's a little different story."

Campbellsville ended its season with a 26-7 record.
