Despite shaving six strokes off its second round score, Campbellsville University was unable to put up a good enough third round Tuesday to climb back into the Top 3 at the National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA) Golf Championships in Panama City, Fla. The Tigers posted a third-round score of 308 at The Hombre Golf Club and had a 54-hole total of 921.
One stroke separated CU from a three-way tie for third-place with Dallas Baptist and Indiana Wesleyan at 919. CU was in second after the first round Monday with a 299 and then shot 313 Monday afternoon to drop to fifth with a score of 612. The Tigers shot 308 Tuesday.
"We had a pretty good tournament up and down. We had a good 36 holes. The guys played great the first round. The second round, they struggled a little bit, but it's always tough when you play 36 holes on a very hot day. Today, they came out and battled as much as they could and finished two strokes from hitting third by ourselves. I know the guys are bummed about that and I am too, but it's something to build upon," CU head coach Kenny Lawson said.
Tanner Mobley started the final round -3 through his first six holes, but overshot the green and went out of bounds on a par 3 shortly after that. The unlucky hit led to a string of bogeys that dropped him to +2 with seven holes remaining. He went on to shoot a 76 at +4 on the day. Tiger senior
Quinn Cole and sophomore
Trey Shirley had the second lowest rounds of the day at 77. Shirley's score dropped him to sixth place overall, but he held onto his NCCAA All-American spot. Cole, who had two rounds of 76 entering today, narrowly missed out on the All-American honor, finishing two strokes out of a three-way tie for eighth. The Top 10 golfers are awarded as All-Americans.
Scott Foster shot 78 for CU, while
Logan Griffin shot 83.
Campbellsville concludes its competition for the fall and will resume play in the spring.
