Campbellsville volleyball must have left its mojo in London, Ky. on its
way to a match Monday night with the University of the Cumberlands.
By the time it caught up with them in Williamsburg the Tigers found
themselves in an 0-1 hole to the Patriots, who came into the meeting on a
six-match win streak.
But Campbellsville nurtured its hopes of a regular-season Mid-South
title by taking the next three sets, 25-13, 25-20 and 25-12, to run its
record to 21-5 (9-1 MSC).
In the first set, CU fell behind 4-1 and 9-3 and never really recovered. The Tigers did get within three at 13-10, but Cumberlands (10-18, 6-5) won seven of the next 13 points for a 20-14 lead and staved off a late Tiger rally, winning its 25th point from a 24-21 score.
Early, the second set looked like a replay of set one until
Caroline Martin served six straight points to help boost her team to a 13-8 margin. From there the Tigers scored 12 of the next 17 points for a 25-13 edge.
Set three turned on a CU block with the scored tied at 7-7 and the Tigers went on to outscore the Patriots 17-13, holding Cumberlands to nothing less than a five-point lead the rest of the way.
Campbellsville sewed up the match in the fourth set, taking control again at 8-7 and building that to a 17-10 lead on its way to a 25-12 win.
Campbellsville had a 56-32 team kill margin over the Patriots, led by
Shannon Cahill's 15.
Genevieve Collette,
Samantha James and
Monica Chernichan had 12, 11 and 10 respectively. Martin had 44 assists in the four sets and
Audrey Sanders led the team in digs with 17. Martin and Chernichan had 14 and 10, respectively.
Campbellsville awaits Georgetown at home on Thursday in a major league east division MSC matchup. The teams are tied in the conference loss column at 9-1 and 7-1 with Georgetown traveling to Lindsey Wilson Tuesday night. Shawnee State, in the east division, has an 8-1 state.
