After losing a back-and-forth first set, 25-23, Campbellsville University was unable to steal a set from the defending Mid-South Conference champion Georgetown College, losing the MSC West battle Thursday, 3-0.
The two Tiger teams traded point-for-point to open the match, with
Caroline Martin giving CU its first lead of the match, 5-4, with a tip in the first set. Georgetown regained the lead and never gave it up in the opening set, but the CU Lady Tigers stayed close and evened the score, 23-23. A block attempt by Martin almost swung advantage toward Campbellsville, but the ball fell outside the line for Georgetown's point. Cathy Frank finished off the match with a kill for the visiting Tigers.
CU junior hitter
Shannon Cahill, who was honored before the game for joining the program's 1,000 Kill Club, opened the second set with a kill to give CU an early 1-0 lead. She collected three more kills in the set, including one to even the score, 10-10, but Frank answered to give the visiting team the lead for good in the set at 11-10. Her kill sparked a 12-2 run by Georgetown. Campbellsville's attempt to rally from a 22-12 deficit fell short in the 25-19 second set loss.
Set three was nearly the same as the second set, as Georgetown closed out the match victory with a 25-19 win.
Samantha James and
Kelly Moyer led the CU offense with three kills each in the set.
Monica Chernichan had 12 kills in the match, while Cahill finished with 11 to bring her three-year career total to 1,120. Martin, who was also honored before the match for a career milestone, had 31 assists. She now has 2,244 assists in her two-year career - only the fourth CU player to ever have 2,000 assists.
Martin and
Audrey Sanders led the defense with 14 digs each, while
Giselle Hernandez had 10.
