What doesn't kill you will make you stronger, and that's exactly what Amy Eckenfels is hoping after her volleyball team suffered a couple of stinging defeats at Georgetown College's Boneyard Brawl on Friday.
Campbellsville couldn't keep its momentum going and lost a five-set match early Friday afternoon to Savannah College of Art and Design, 21-25, 30-28, 25-20, 17-25 and 13-15. Then No. 11 Taylor University snatched a three set win, 23-25, 15-25 and 23-25.
It doesn't get any easier for the Tigers as they close out Boneyard play Saturday with successive matches against Indiana Wesleyan and No. 2 Lee University.
After dropping the first set against Savannah, Campbellsville rallied for a 2-1 lead. In the fourth set SCAD went on a 6-0 run to gain a 15-7 advantage and the Tigers never seriously threatened after that.
In the deciding set, Campbellsville tied the score at 9-9, 10-10 and 11-11 on kills by
Monica Chernichan, Shannon Cahill and
Genevieve Collette, respectively. But Savannah (13-13) drew away 13-11 and went on for the 15-13 win.
In five-setters the smallest things can be the difference. It appeared that the team with the fewest errors won each game. Campbellsville had nine errors to SCAD's three in the fourth set when momentum took a U turn.
Chernichan led the Tigers with 19 kills. Cahill had 17 and 15 digs to hammer out her double-double.
Caroline Martin had 54 assists and 10 digs.
Lexis Lloyd and
Audrey Sanders had 12 and 11 digs, respectively.
Taylor, which had lost a five-setter to Lee previously, picked up its fourth win in five starts against the Tigers, dating back to 2007.
Saturday's matches are at 11:00 and 3:00.
