Campbellsville University received its final tuneup for the National Christian College Athletic Association National Championships, finishing third Tuesday in the Southern Wesleyan University Invitational.
"It's another third place finish, but the guys battled for two days on a very tight and tough course," CU head coach Kenny Lawson said. "This was a good test for us getting ready to head to the NCCAA Championships at the Hombre."
Scott Foster led the Tigers to its third-place finish among 10 teams in Easley, S.C. The sophomore from Cincinnati, Ohio, finished fifth in the individual competition with a two-day score of 152. He led all golfers on par 3 holes, finishing the tournament at -1 on such holes and had the second-best score on par fives, sitting at -4 for the week. Foster is one of five golfers in the tournament, and the only Tiger, to have an eagle and collected 22 pars during the 36-hole event.
Finishing second for the Tigers and eighth overall was
Trey Shirley, a sophomore from Edmonton, Ky. Shirley led the Tigers with five birdies in the tournament and fared best on par 4 holes at +4. No golfer in the tournament shot even or below par on par 4 holes for the tournament.
Logan Smith, who led CU the previous week with a third-place finish at the Don Bishop Invitational, was third this week for CU and 12th overall with a score of 155. He rebounded from a team-high score of 82 on Monday to shoot a team-low 73 on Tuesday. It was the fifth lowest round in the tournament overall. He led CU with 23 pars in the tournament and shot +6 on par 4 holes combined.
The fourth score for Campbellsville belonged to
Quinn Cole, who shot 78 and 81 in the two days.
Tanner Mobley fell from second to fifth for CU after shooting an 87 on Tuesday to finish 34th overall. He shot 77 on Monday and finished the first round in a tie for 10th place.
Host school Southern Wesleyan University won the tournament with a team score of 598. Low medalist Zachary Moore led SWU with a low round 69 Tuesday and tournament score of 141. Faulkner University was second with a two-day score of 605, despite shooting with the Tigers' 305 score Tuesday.
Campbellsville travels to the NCCAA National Championships in Panama City Beach, Fla., next week. Practice round at The Hombre Golf Club begins at 11 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 10. The three-round tournament begins Monday, Oct. 11 with shotgun starts at 8 a.m. and 1 p.m. for the first two rounds and the final round will begin at 8 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 12.
