Box Score With a 56-35 win at West Virginia University Tech on Saturday Campbellsville University clinched its first trip to a postseason game since 2001.
The Fighting Tigers will conclude their "Over the Top" campaign Nov. 20 in the National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA) Victory Bowl - an invitational game involving the association's top two football teams.
"I think it's huge for our program and at the level we're at right now. Certainly our goal is to get to the NAIA postseason and win that national title but along that road you've got to take steps and this is one of those steps," CU head coach Perry Thomas said.
Campbellsville carried itself to victory with 334 yards on the ground, led by first-year Tiger Mark Terry. Born in West Virginia, Terry entered the game with a mission of collecting 200 yards in front of his family which was there to watch. He finished the day with the second-most carries (34) in Tiger history, 218 yards and three touchdowns.
"I set a goal for 200 today. I knew I needed at least 200 for a 1,000 and we needed 200 for 2,000 as a team," said Terry, originally from Greenbrier, W.Va. "I had to come back home and told my family I was going to put on for them. I had to put on a show for them.
Terry reached 1,000 yards for the season in the fourth quarter and he became the first Tiger to ever rush for three touchdowns in a game on three different occasions during the same season. CU reached the 2,000 mark by halftime.
"Mark ran the ball really hard today. He ran behind his pads really well, so they were kind of timid to come out and hit him. I thought the key was the offensive line. Any time those backs don't have to make somebody miss they can just go right at them (and that) is key," Thomas said.
Campbellsville kicked off to start the game for the first time this season. Tech didn't take long to get on the board, as Jamel Shelton scored on a 15-yard run to cap a five-play, 69 yard drive. The Golden Bears took an early 8-0 lead after A.J. Schmidt ran in the 2-point try.
CU answered with a 9-yard TD pass from
Robert Hill to
Demetric Ray. Hill looked to tie the game 2-point try, but fumbled the ball. After holding Tech, Hill capped a 69-yard drive with a 7-yard quarterback scamper. This time the 2-point try was good, as
Harold Small streaked into left corner of the end zone on a reverse, giving CU a 14-8 lead.
Zac Chrsitiensen hit his first of two field goals from 37 yards, keeping WVU Tech within a field goal of the Tigers.
That's when Terry went to work, scoring the next two touchdowns in the west end zone to stretch the Tigers' lead in the second quarter, 28-11.
Tech was not going to go down easy on its Senior Day, as Shelton scored another rushing touchdown, followed by a 36-yard Christiansen field goal to pull back within a touchdown, 28-21, as halftime approached.
Campbellsville responded to Christiansen's field goal by pounding out a 57-yard drive on the ground to start the second half.
Wayne Coffee, who had 72 yards rushing for CU, finished the drive with his first touchdown of the day from 3 yards out.
Tech had an answer though. With eight minutes left in the third quarter, Tech quarterback Michael Scott eluded the pass rush of
William Harris and found Joey Christian on the Tigers' sideline for a 34-yard touchdown.
CU answered again with a short touchdown run by Coffee, but Tech appeared to be entering a shootout with the second-ranked team in the Mid-South Conference East Division.
As Scott stepped away from a pass rush, CU defensive back
Jeffrey Demary stepped in front of a Golden Bear receiver to pick off the pass and return it to the Tech 26-yard line.
"The defense was searching for a big turnover. I was searching for an interception. I had three this year, and I just needed another one and I knew the fourth one would be to win the game," said Demary. "He threw it up there and I knew I had to get it. I had a shot at one earlier and dropped it. a native of Columbia, S.C. - one hour away from next week's Victory Bowl setting.
Terry capped the drive with his third touchdown of the day to keep the Golden Bears down. But the knock out came on the next possession.
On the ensuing kickoff, senior
Dexter McAtee recovered a fumble and scored on a 10-yard pass two plays later, punching the Tigers' ticket to the post season and extending CU's lead to 56-28 with 14 minutes remaining.
Campbellsville gave up a final Golden Bears' score with four minutes play.
Campbellsville will depart Thursday, Nov. 18 for Tigerville, S.C., where it will participate in service projects in the area Friday and will meet former MSC opponent North Greenville in the Victory Bowl at 1 p.m. EDT.
"I'm real proud of the guys and really proud of the crowd we had today. I thought it was a huge crowd for the distance. We certainly need a huge crowd to go next week. We're going to play a Division II team at their home field, and certainly they're going to be larger than us," Thomas said. "We're going to need all of the support we can get to come with us and get behind these guys and see if we can't win a national title."
Tickets for the game are $10 for adults and $5 for children 6-12 years of age.
