BRISTOL, Tenn. - Top-seed Campbellsville University might have lost the
opener to Oakland City (Ind.) University, but the Tigers roared back to
win 3-1 and clinch the top spot in Pool A of the NCCAA Mid-East Region.
Campbellsville, now at 28-10, will face Asbury (Ky.) University, the No. 2 seed and Pool B runner up, at 10 a.m. in the first semifinal. King (Tenn.) College, the winner of Pool B and No. 3 seed, and Oakland City will meet in the second semifinal at noon.
Oakland City came out and knocked Campbellsville off in the first set 25-16. Campbellsville, the No. 4 team nationally and defending NCCAA National Champion, then won the next three sets 25-19, 25-14 and 25-17.
Shannon Cahill paced the Tigers with 17 kills. Genevieve Collete added 10 kills with eight from
Kelly Moyer.
Lilian DaSilva provided 37 assists.
Giselle Hernandez was responsible for 16 digs.
For Oakland City, Alicia Hartley and Carleigh Johnson both had eight kills. Hartley also served four aces. Allison Eads added 27 assists. Kiersten Harville had the most digs for Oakland City with 17. Michelle Goodnight was not far behind with 15. Elana Eickholz added two solo and two assisted blocks.
GAME 1
Campbellsville opened defense of its NCCAA Mid-East Region volleyball title with a straight-set match victory over Covenant College Friday at King College in Bristol, Tenn., 25-12, 25-14, 25-14.
The Tigers, the No. 1 seed and playing in Pool A, will meet Oakland City today at 7:00. The top two teams in Pool A and B will meet in Saturday's semifinals.
Campbellsville secured a spot in Saturday's NCCAA Mid-East Region Volleyball Tournament semifinals thanks to a 3-0 win over Covenant (Ga.) College.
Campbellsville started with a 25-12 victory with two straight 25-14 scores to finish off the match.
The winner between Campbellsville and Oakland City wins the pool, but both teams will play on Saturday in semifinal contests.
Covenant's 2010 season comes to an end at 19-15.
Campbellsville's
Monica Chernichan led the team with 13 kills and she also served two aces with a dozen kills from
Shannon Cahill.
Samantha James added eight kills.
Carolina Martin posted a double-double for Campbellsville with 33 assists and a dozen digs.
Audrey Sanders paced Campbellsville with 13 digs.
