Campbellsville University closed its Mid-South Conference schedule with a three-set win (25-17, 25-12, 25-14) at St. Catharine College Thursday.
With kills leader Shannon Cahill sitting the match out nursing an injury, Genevieve Collette stepped up to lead the Lady Tigers on the outside. The Winnipeg, Canada junior, who was named the MSC Hitter of the Week on Monday, continued her strong hitting with a team-high 13 kills. Monica Chernichan was next with eight kills.
"Carol(line Martin) trusted Gen more
than anyone because she was getting it done," CU head coach Amy Eckenfels said. "Everybody relied on her tonight. She was
the go-to person for Carol. When the ball was so far away, she'd back up so far
to get the kill."
Kelly Moyer and Giselle Hernandez filled in for Cahill.
Martin collected her 12th consecutive double-double with 34 assists and 11 digs.
While CU won the match by large margins, Eckenfels sees room for improvement entering the Mid-South Conference Tournament, Nov. 8.
"The score showed we were leading and doing well, but we did
a lot of things wrong. We were out of our game," Eckenfels said. "We were not playing aggressive. We
were doing little things we cannot do against Georgetown and Shawnee in the
conference tournament."
Campbellsville (24-9, 11-2 MSC) will close out the regular season Thursday, Nov. 4 with its Senior Night match at home against Indiana University Southeast. The match in Powell Athletic Center is scheduled for 7 p.m. Following Thursday's match, the Lady Tigers will enter the MSC Tournament as the No. 2 seed from the West and will face the University of Virginia College at Wise in the MSC Tournament quarterfinals Nov. 8.
