CU men use Savage layup to nip Cumberland University, 60-58

Box Score COLUMBIA, KY. -  Maybe Campbellsville just isn't meant to be a second half team? But the Tigers were just good enough Saturday to slip by Cumberland University, 60-58.

After leading by one, 28-27, at the half, Campbellsville (3-1) relinquished the lead early after intermission and trailed by five with about three minutes to go in the game.

"I'm not happy with the way we played," said coach Keith Adkins. "We have a lot of room to improve, but we got two wins over TransSouth teams this weekend. I'm proud of the guys for that."

The Tigers were trailing 27-22 late in the first half when Haris Batalevic hit his fifth 3 of the first 20 minutes. That's when Caleb Harris hit a couple of free throws and JaVaughn Espritt a field goal that gave the Tigers the one-point edge.

With CU trailing 52-47, Harris went in for a layup. The bucket was good and Cumberland's Lamar Brinkley was called for a technical for slapping the back board. Shawn Savage drained a couple of free throws, and an Esprit bucket a few second later knotted the score at 53-53.

Campbellsville stretched the margin to 58-55, and led by one when Espritt missed two free throws. Lindal Yarbrough hit one of two free throws with 16 seconds remaining, setting up Savage's game-winner with six seconds to go.

Savage, who won the previous night's game with two late 3s, took the ball to the basket and hit a layup.

Cumberland (2-4) got an off-balance shot at the buzzer.

Espritt led all scorers with 22 points and Harris had eight rebounds to along with nine points.

"This was a good test," said Adkins. "We've got a lot of room to improve, and I think we will."

Campbellsville plays again on Friday when it hosts Indiana Wesleyan at 7:00
